LESS TALK, MORE WALK

Four construction workers were injured when a scaffold collapsed on the 18th floor of a building under construction at the Hudson Yards site yesterday. Thankfully, no fatalities. But it’s not immediately clear what caused the scaffolding to collapse. Still, considering the frequency of these “accidents,” it begs to ask, WHEN IS A CONSTRUCTION «ACCIDENT» AN “ACCIDENT”?

When is it a Preventable Incident? What can WE do to reduce these occurrences so that everyone goes home at the end of the day?

JUST A THOUGHT: It seems there is a disconnect between what we know and what we do with what we know. Whoever’s “job” it is, make safety YOUR priority EVERYDAY… you might just save someone’s life.

Somebody's 24-year-old!
Reminder: Keep an eye out for yourself AND your colleagues, and try pairing up. Working in "pairs" is not a "union thing," it's a "safety thing."

A 24-year-old construction worker is dead after an accident at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan.

Maybe I am alone on this one, but this does not sound to me a concern for the lives of workers. It sounds like an another new market to make money.
What needs to improve is the quality of the 10-hour classes and companies to continuously work to keep their employees in check. The DOB requires that workers be re-certified every 5 years! Hm... not sure if this is about worker safety (did I say that already?).

The city’s Buildings Department is taking steps toward safer construction sites.

CONSTRUCTION SAFETY - MORE THAN DUE DILIGENCE
When you go to work at a construction site, you "assume" that all site safety measures; design measures have been taken by manufacturers whose equipment and machinery have been used, workmen(women) are using the equipment as intended; you employer has done its due diligence.

It is assumed that you and your coworkers have been properly trained in your respective areas of expertise, that all equipment function accordingly and everyone is on his/her highest level of awareness. You assume there is a COMPETENT PERSON onsite (if you are the designated competent person, you are fit to perform the job) and that person is not simply the "designated competent" person, but also one who exercises "competent" and sound judgement and behaviors.

All too often, the above are not the only factors that cause site accidents, even fatalities. What happens when it is out of your hands as a PM, as a CM, as an engineer? What do you do when you have done your part?

Workplace & Jobsite Practices: You've Seen It. You've Done It.

Those in charge of construction sites must take extra precautions to keep their workers and members of the public safe. More and more, we must be vigilant to improve public safety. This is more than due-diligence.
I was visiting a project site a week ago, A contractor had put up hundreds of linear feet of construction fence, a number of gates, to enclose various sections of a site that took up several blocks of a popular pedestrian and bike path. Obviously there are gaps between gate posts and the chain to secure the gates. I was so alarmed by how many people either, walked into the fence/gates, while on their phones.

One guy actually walked into a 2"-pipe post at the street corner... looked like it hurt. After cursing as he nursed his forehead, kicked the posts, hurt his toes. He cursed aloud some more, turned back again flipped the fence the bird!

The best one yet, a fellow walked up to one of the construction areas, looked around, saw the areas on both sides to a popular ramp was closed off, with signs every 20' or so, a gate in front of him to secure the active construction site. He walked from one of the gate post to the other, then tried to squeeze himself around one of the posts, whose gap was no more than 3" or so. SMH
*Construction safety and personal responsibility are understated.

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS - HUMID DAYS
Ideally, an air conditioning unit helps to reduce the temperature in your home (or any space) and remove excess humidity through condensation. More often than not, however, it may feel as if the unit is not functioning efficiently. This is a sure sign that your AC will be working far harder than it is designed to. The excess stress on your machine causes wear and tear to occur faster as well as using more energy as well.

DON'T IGNORE IT. IT WILL COST YOU MORE.
Are you not getting the results you expect from your home, building AC unit? Here are some clear signs:
• The windows in your home are foggy with condensation.
• You can pick up a musty smell in the air inside.
• The air feels moist/wet and you can sense the moisture
when breathing in.
It can also cause deterioration of indoor furniture and objects if you are not careful, which also means, you may be breathing in the particulates dissipating in the air. (Whether it's the slimy black spots on your shower curtain, the fuzzy white patches on your basement floor, or the slick orange film that forms on your kitchen drain, household mold is more than unsightly. In some cases, mold in your home can make you sick, especially if you have allergies or asthma.) *Act fast!

REMOVE HUMIDITY:
It is recommended that you keep the level of humidity down below 60% for optimal comfort levels.

A second option is to purchase a dehumidifier that is stand-alone. Using the indicator on the device, you can manage the levels accordingly. Some units come with sensors to automatically turn on and off when it is time.
