We just used this great insulation product by Quicktherm. It went in efficiently (thanks to Island Excavation’s perfect prep!), with interlocking tiles that had lay out marks to keep it all straight. After that, the radiant install took half the typical time and it easily withstood the foot traffic. If you are doing a slab on grade with radiant heat, this system is hard to beat! 2.75” R10.

Concrete is well known for its strength and durability in building construction but less known for its beauty. Instead of covering over concrete structures with more common finish materials, it is increasingly popular to highlight concrete as an exposed surface. Polished concrete floors, poured in place countertops, and board formed concrete walls are just a few ways that concrete is being used in modern construction. In one current SSB project, a beautiful board formed concrete wall bridges the interior and exterior of the home with a hidden insulated channel to prevent heat loss. The concrete contractor/artist is Lupe Estrada of J&E Construction.

About Us

Central to our approach at SSB is a belief that sustainability, efficiency, and performance are not only important factors but necessary in today's building process. We are a Lake Tahoe based custom builder founded in 2002, serving both Nevada and California. We have a history of experience working in Tahoe's unique environment of regulatory agencies and extreme climate. Our years in the region have allowed us to develop valuable relationships with quality local architects, subcontractors, suppliers, and building department officials. The SSB portfolio is deep, including new residential construction, complex remodel/addition, commercial remodel, as well as cabinetry and custom furniture. We utilize a talented in-house carpentry staff and our knowledge of cutting-edge building science to build efficient, healthy, and durable dwellings.

Danny and Cory, the founders of SSB, have been friends since 1984. For them, construction was originally a means to travel and work, utilizing their skills wherever life took them. Born out of a discontent for the typical, wasteful approach to building, they decided to form Sierra Sustainable Builders. In the years since, they have completed numerous projects of remarkable quality in which they were deeply involved in every detail. They take great pride in their quality of work, creative solutions, and client relations.
