Our week of Innovator highlights is soon coming to a close and today we are highlighting our most recent winner, the 2025 RT3 Innovator of the Year, Nick Zavala of American Home Contractors.

Zavala was nominated for his role in adapting his company in the solar roofing industry by consistently embracing innovation, expanding product offerings and enhancing operational excellence. By leveraging technology for task management and customer engagement, he has created a process-driven design that simplifies project tracking, enhances communication and ensures quality delivery at scale.

“Nick leverages technology to bring innovation to his business and brings a unique experience to his customers, he’s helping chart the new normal for the roofing industry!” stated Anna Anderson, CEO of A-Squared Marketing, RT3 Award Task Team Leader and past RT3 Board President. “He positioned American Home Contractors to be a leader in solar-integrated roofing solutions which is where the roofing industry is headed.”

Ken Kelly, 2021 Innovator of the Year and co-presenter of the award, added, “Innovation is more than just fancy technology. Nick looks at first principles and makes every part of the back end, installation and customer journey better. That’s what makes him a true innovator.”

Our next Innovator highlight is RT3's 2024 Innovator of the Year, Paul Spies of Iron Head Roofing.

“Paul is truly an innovator who leveraged the power of technology to help his workers stay safer,” stated Anna Anderson, CEO of A-Squared Marketing, RT3 Award Task Team Leader and past RT3 Board President. “This technology represents a proactive approach that prioritizes workplace safety and ultimately reduces fatalities in our industry.”

Spies was nominated for developing a unique solution that leverages technology and AI to address safety issues that he was experiencing in his roofing company. He invented an AI-powered camera system that uses real-time monitoring to detect whether workers’ harness ropes are properly secured, notifying site managers when a safety risk is identified. After finding success using the technology within Ironhead Roofing, he created Smart Safety Solutions LLC to share this game-changing safety solution with the industry.

Our next Innovator highlight is RT3’s 2023 Innovator of the Year, John Kiesel, president of Division 7 Roofing.

“John’s development and use of photogrammetry and 3D models as well as augmented reality is leading the industry into the future,” stated Anna Anderson, CEO of A-Squared Marketing, RT3 Award Task Team Leader and past RT3 Board President. “In addition, he is sharing these technologies with local trade schools and hiring summer interns to show the appeal of a career in roofing.”

Kiesel began roofing at the age of 17 working for his father’s roofing business. He worked his way up from field worker to superintendent to general manager and today is president of Division 7 Roofing. “I feel the pain of roofing and recognize that when innovation or technology is able to disrupt the barbaric nature of roofing, I embrace that and I want to see roofing be a more accommodating career,” he said.

“Ken is a visionary leader who embraced the potential that technology could bring to both his company and the roofing industry,” stated Anna Anderson, CEO of A-Squared Marketing, Award Task Team Leader and RT3 Board President. “He fully leveraged technology to automate many of the processes in his company, doubling the size of his business without adding additional staff.”

The Kelly Roofing team is willing to share their knowledge and help others in the industry. Ken has been a speaker on several RT3 webinars and educational panels, sharing his experiences and helping other contractors with their technology journey. He has also hosted contractors at his company who want to see the operation and understand how the company is using technology on a daily basis.
