Spotlight on: Lactobacillus
- Lactobacillus is one of the most common bacterial beer spoilers. It causes a tart or sour flavor in finished beer.
- Lactobacillus is a facultative anaerobic bacterium. That means it will grow best when there is no oxygen in its environment.
- Since Lactobacillus doesn't like oxygen, it can grow in beer easily, but can be difficult to test for.
- In order to test for Lactobacillus and other anaerobic bacteria, you need to use an anaerobic jar or a media that is specifically designed to remove oxygen.
- At Frontier Fermentation, we can detect very low levels of Lactobacillus before they cause off flavors in your beer!
