Peel Region has used the SolarWall® technology on many new municipal buildings as part of their Climate Change Master Plan.

This is the brand new Wolfedale Yard that will come into service later in 2026 to service the rapidly expanding City of Mississauga in the Greater Toronto area.
This building has a high fresh air requirement and the SolarWall technology was determined to be an ideal fit. The systems are a combined 3,500 SQF on two walls and will preheat 12,000 CFM of outdoor ventilation air. The systems are connected to 100% makeup air units which are primarily heated via heat-pump with electrical resistance backup heating.

At $0.15/kWh this project is anticipated to save 38,330 kWh of electricity per year resulting in approximately $5,750 in savings annually. It will also offset 116 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over its 40 year lifespan.

Heat the Heat Pump

A new application is developing for solar heated air - air source heat pumps for space heating and domestic hot water.

Heat pumps require a heat source, typically outside air. As this temperature drops, the ability of the heat pump to absorb heat also drops. When outdoor temperature falls to freezing, moisture in the air passing over the outside heat pump coil will condense and freeze on it. This frost must be removed. When the heat pump switches to defrost mode, the refrigerant cycle must be run in reverse so that hot air is passed over the outdoor coil to melt the frost.

Heat pumps can also heat water by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the water tank, making it an energy-efficient alternative to traditional water heaters. However, as domestic hot water tanks are located indoors, the heat being transferred to the water tank will increases the energy demand for the space heating component of the indoor space.

A better solution is to duct solar heated air to these air source heat pumps. For space heating heat pumps, the air temperature is raised above the freezing point to eliminate defrosting and improve the COP. For hot water heating, the room air is not the heat source so no need to oversize the room heater to accommodate the hot water tank heater.

Vehicle maintenance garages require massive quantities of makeup air which is typically heated with natural gas. CPKC was undergoing a building and mechanical system renovation on a garage in Winnipeg, Canada; As part of their reduction commitment they installed an 8,000 square foot SolarWall system in the spring of 2023 and 2024.

The SolarWall technology is a solar air heating system that uses the power of the sun to heat ventilation air. The efficiency of the system and the high energy production aligned with the high ventilation requirement of the building to produce an excellent application. The system will result in a lifetime reduction of 3,242 tCO2 over its 40 year lifespan.

Energy is a major input and cost for poultry farms. As with many building types, heat demand is the largest single usage of energy for broiler houses in heating climates.

SolarWall® systems can reduce up to 30% of the costs which is why they have been applied to hundreds of poultry barns in Canada. This helps operators to increase their long-term profitably and competitiveness. Also many of these buildings rely on propane or heating oil, which leads to a sizable reduction.

Welcome to my new monthly posts. As inventor of the SolarWall technology, I want to share some of my solar experiences and will begin with the thermostat switch over from cooling to heating. Solar heating is free and the old rules of conserving energy by lowering the thermostat is not necessary when the sun shines so let the heat flow a few degrees above the gas set point and enjoy the warmth without travelling south. By raising the daytime temperature, the thermal mass inside the building will provide additional heat into the evening hours which will further reduce the natural gas usage. I recommend setting the solar thermostat at a minimum 23 C or 73 F but still maintain the gas setting at the lower level. Try it.
