Why Kellogg’s ‘Donut Hole’ Math Doesn’t Quite Add Up

Kellogg’s new packaging for donut-hole–shaped cereal proudly proclaims they’ve “done the math” and found donut holes to be the perfect shape for maximum glaze coverage. It’s a fun idea—but geometrically, it’s oversimplified.

Total Surface Area vs. Surface Area–to–Volume Ratio

A torus (actual donut shape) has a larger total surface area than a small spherical donut hole simply because it uses more dough overall. More dough = more total area to glaze.
A sphere (donut-hole shape), however, has a higher surface area per unit volume, meaning if you have a small amount of dough shaped into a sphere, you expose more dough per cubic inch than a torus would. That higher ratio helps with things like quicker frying or easy glazing—but it doesn’t automatically mean the sphere trumps the donut in total glaze coverage.
Where the Confusion Arises

If you take the exact same amount of dough and shape half into a donut and half into a donut hole, the donut—having more dough—will have the greater total surface area.
Kellogg’s packaging suggests donut holes capture “more glaze,” but that really applies to a small piece of dough shaped as a sphere, not necessarily an entire box of cereal pieces compared to full donuts.
A Fun “Hole” Truth

Donut holes are efficient in soaking up glaze because of their higher surface-area–to–volume ratio; in practice, that means each small piece gets thoroughly coated.
But if you compare an entire donut to a single donut hole, the donut usually has more overall surface to be glazed.
In short, Kellogg’s cereal box claim confuses total surface area with surface-area efficiency. Donut holes don’t necessarily have more surface area than an entire donut—they simply make the most of what little dough they have by exposing a bigger fraction of it to glaze. It’s still a clever (and tasty) marketing move—just not ironclad geometry!
