We want to do a little venting and hope the right people take notice.
As a Contractor/Trade Company, we understand that people that want to start a business often begin by doing some side jobs here and there. Then, with luck, the work will grow into a thriving company. A lot of the time, a contractors license or tradesman license has not been acquired. We as a company totally understand that...on a temporary basis.
Once the individuals work load becomes a steady business, even to the point of publicly advertising and posting pictures of work being done on a regular basis, and to be advertising on social media with a company name, they should have had substantial time to acquire a DPOR Tradesman's license and Contractors license.
Without having those, the individual cannot have general liability insurance, company vehicle insurance, ability to provide a W9 tax information, company bank account, or even have the business name properly listed.
Legitimate companies pay thousands of dollars a year to operate by the legal standards required by the state they operate in. It's is not fair to the honest contractors to have individuals doing work and being able to low ball jobs due to them not having to pay the massive amount of fees that we have to pay.
If you see or know a person doing this please report it to your local building department. It's the fair and honest thing to do. And most likely will help or benefit a customer that could potentially be ripped off, deal with improper work, or even loss of life or limb.
