Clean Streets = Cleaner Waters

What gets left on the street doesn’t always stay there.

Dirt, sediment, leaves, litter, and other debris can get picked up by the next storm and carried into storm drains and local waterways. That’s why street sweeping is about more than keeping roads looking clean.

Removing that material before the rain reaches it is a practical way for communities to help reduce what enters the stormwater system.

Clean streets. Cleaner water. It really is connected.

Milling gets a lot of attention. The cleanup afterward usually doesn’t.

But anyone who’s worked around a milling job knows how much loose asphalt, dust, and fine material can be left behind. You don’t want the next crew working around all of that.

That’s where a good sweep makes a difference. Clear the leftover material, clean up the roadway, and give the next phase of the job a better starting point.

It’s a simple part of the job, but one worth doing right.

It doesn't feel like fall yet. But if you manage parking lots, commercial properties, or municipal streets, now is the time to start thinking ahead.

Once leaves begin to fall, they don't stay put for long. They collect along curbs, block storm drains, hold moisture against pavement, and create more cleanup work if they're left too long.

A sweeping plan that's in place before the season starts is easier to manage than trying to catch up after every storm.

A storm drain doesn't know the difference between rainwater and pollution.

Once debris, sediment, and fine particles are washed off the street, they're much harder to stop. That's why many MS4 programs include street sweeping as a Best Management Practice. The goal isn't just cleaner roads. It's reducing pollutants before they ever reach the stormwater system.

Regular sweeping helps remove the material that rainfall carries into storm drains, streams, rivers, and lakes. It is a simple, proactive step that supports permit compliance while protecting local waterways.

The best stormwater management often starts long before the rain arrives.

Rain has a way of showing us what's been left behind.

Routine municipal street sweeping is one of the simplest ways to stay ahead of the problem. It helps reduce debris before it travels into the drainage system, supports better stormwater management, and keeps neighborhoods looking well cared for throughout the summer.

Meet Aardy. 🐾

Last year, our Member companies came together behind a cause bigger than any single business: raising the funds needed to train a service dog through K9s For Warriors, the organization that pairs rescue dogs with veterans facing PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and military sexual trauma.

Together, our Members raised over $30,000. With 1-800-SWEEPER Member, Aardvark-Memphis holding the honor of naming the dog Aardy.
