Final Update - March 2026 Storm

As of this update we have 6 meters without power and expect to complete these repairs tonight. What we thought was very manageable damage form the windstorm on Thursday evolved in a relentless winter storm that caused significant damage. To put this into perspective, our system peaked at around 4,000 meters without power, but the crews have restored power to over 15,300 meters since Thursday morning. This is because as quickly as we restored one outage, another area would lose power. Other times we would restore a line one evening and it would be out again the next morning.

I want to give one final thank you to our crews, our support staff, and the crews from Ravalli, Vigilante, and Potelco. You all did an amazing job.
And a final thanks to our members for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or concerns following this event, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
This will be the final update for the March 2026 storm.

Huson, Frenchtown, North of I90
All power has been restored in this area.

Frenchtown, Missoula Valley South of I90
All power has been restored in this area.

Clinton
All outages have been restored for today. Crews will return in next day or two to make repairs on a line feeding to the top of Bonita Peak.

Bonner, Potomac
All services have been restored except for one meter that suffered damage on the consumer side. This is a long, forested mountain crossing serving 1 meter, and it will be addressed when consumer side repairs are made

Woodworth
One crew is working on the Morris Ranch tap, and another was just dispatched to the final outage of the day near the Woodworth Substation. We expect these to be restored tonight.

Ovando, Helmville
We have one crew working along the Cooper Blackfoot Road in the Northfork Area and is hopeful this can be completed tonight.

Seeley Lake to the Summit
A crew is currently working on the final outage on Old Sawmill and expects it to be completed tonight.

Noon Update March 16

For the first time since last Thursday, our crews arrived this morning with the same number of outages as when they went home last evening. That is a milestone because it means the system has stabilized and the impacts from the weather are not causing additional outages while restoration is ongoing. We currently have 122 meters without power and crews working in nearly every corner of the system.

If your meter is out, and you do not believe your area is represented in the locations listed below please give us a call. Crews are prioritizing safety and efficiency, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate these difficult conditions.

Thank you to our crews, our support staff, and the crews from Ravalli, Vigilante, and Potelco. It’s been another long grind, and we are close to the finish. Now especially is the time to keep safety front and center so that everyone gets home safely for some well-deserved rest.

Finally, thank you to our members for your patience and understanding throughout this event. Your support means a great deal to our crews and staff who have been working long hours to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.

9:00PM Update March 15

The crews had a very productive afternoon and will continue to work for next couple of hours before beginning their rest period. We are currently sitting at 322 outages. We will not achieve full restoration today.

I want to thank every member who was impacted by this outage event for their patience and understanding as we work to get your power back on. I read so many social media posts expressing appreciation for our crews and staff, and we feel that same appreciation for our members.

If your meter is out, and you do not believe your area is represented in the locations listed below please give us a call. We will also be running a system-wide meter check tomorrow to ensure no meter is missed. Crews are prioritizing safety and efficiency, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate these difficult conditions.

Noon Update March 15, 2026

Other than some setbacks in Seeley Lake overnight, all other crews have begun their day in the locations they were scheduled. We are currently sitting at 1,095 outages, and hopeful for a very productive afternoon and evening. We are not expecting full restoration today.
Please check back for a 9:00 PM report to see where we stand and our plans for tomorrow.

We are also expecting a mutual aid crew to arrive from Vigilante Electric Cooperative at around noon today. They are scheduled to head toward Ovando and Helmville as soon as they arrive. We thank them for their assistance.

I also want to give a huge shout out to Kina Kuhn and Blackfoot for their assistance in delivering lunches to our crews in the field for the past two days. What a great example of Cooperation among Cooperatives!

If you are still out of power please contact us so we can address the issue as soon as possible as many individual outages still exist. Crews are prioritizing safety and efficiency, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate these difficult conditions.

Huson, Frenchtown, North of I90

Today one crew began north of the interstate in Frenchtown, working their way west. They have made good progress and are currently working in the Roman Creek area, and will move on to address for multiple locations in the Six-Mile area and one in Kennedy Creek. They are completing their work now, and are scheduled to head that way this afternoon. They will be joined by an additional crew from Vigilante once they arrive.

Seeley Lake

I am told that the Seeley Lake area received a significant amount of snow overnight. This created issues when we received a 911 dispatch that lines had fallen over Highway 83 in the middle of town. That issue has been repaired, and 12 meters remain without power. They will be addressed as crews become available.

Swan Valley

Three crews returned to the Swan Valley today. One is currently working on the far north end of the system, a second restored the majority of meters in the Salmon Lake area, while the other is currently working along Kaufman Road. 9:00 PM Update March 14

As crews prepare to wrap up another long day, progress has been made, but there is much work still to be done. The system peaked at over 3,000 outages earlier today, but thankfully the weather this afternoon gave the crews a break from the snow and rain, at least in the southern portions of the system. We are now dealing with deep snow in parts of the system, and mud in the rest, making access to poles and wire challenging in many locations. We expect to be sitting at approximately 1,400 meters when crews begin rest period tonight.

To assist with restoration, we called in reinforcements today from Ravalli Electric and they arrived late this morning. We greatly appreciate their support as we continue the hard work of safely restoring power to our members.

The detailed reports below outline our general plan for crew assignments by area tomorrow morning. Please know that these plans are subject to change based upon emerging issues that could occur overnight. If your meter is out, we are aware and your outage will be addressed. Crews are prioritizing safety and efficiency, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate these difficult conditions.

Tarkio Area

The crew is wrapping up work on the final outage along Rivulet Road now, and once completed power will be restored to all points west of Huson in the I90 corridor.

Huson, Frenchtown, and Missoula Valley

Late this afternoon the line feeding Deschamps Lane, the Wye area and locations west of the airport along Broadway tripped offline, interrupting power to nearly 350 meters. Crews are making repairs now and we expect that to be fully restored tonight. There are still several locations without power including Kennedy Creek, Spotted Fawn, Conifer, Wambli, Pond Rd, Cary Lane, Hamel Rd, Southside Rd, Sherman Gulch, Virginia Lane, Melody Lane, Cote Lane, Council Way and other smaller outages.

Lolo, Miller Creek

We expect Miller Creek to be fully restored tonight. We were unable to free up a crew to work on the Lolo Creek outage but will have one heading that way in the morning.

Clinton

Repairs to the main lines coming out of the Clinton Substation took much of the day, but those are completed and 242 individuals remain without power tonight. Rock Creek was fully restored, and outages remain in the I 90 corridor east to Beavertail Hill, Swartz Creek, Donovan Creek, Clinton Town, Bonfire Court, and other scattered smaller outages

Bonner, Potomac

Unfortunately we were unable to free up crews to address the 356 outages in the Potomac Valley today. A crew will begin their day in this area tomorrow morning.
Woodworth
Power was restored to the majority of meters on the Woodworth with remaining 15 meters in the River Watch area and two locations along Woodworth Road.

Ovando, Helmville

Crews are currently working to replace a broken pole on the main line feeding Kleinschmidt Flats and Coopers Lake. They will return in the morning to continue addressing issues in these areas as well as Monture Creek and Helmville.

Seeley Lake, Placid Lake

We have a total of 9 meters without power in the Double Arrow that will be addressed in the morning.

Swan Valley

Three worked all day replacing two broken poles and continuing repair work on isolated taps. In this area. They will return in the morning with the goal of cleaning this area up tomorrow. Remaining areas include Holland Lake, Salmon Prairie, Old Condon Loop, the North end of the System Including Old Mill Road, and other scattered outages.

Check back for additional updates this evening as we work to restore power safely across the system, and as always thank you for your patience and understanding.

10:30 AM Update March 14

As feared, the wet, heavy snow overnight has caused a significant number of tree failures and downed powerlines across our entire service territory. When crews began their rest period last night, 198 meters remained without power, primarily concentrated in the Swan Valley and Ovando areas. Overnight, conditions worsened, and this morning that number has risen to nearly 2,500 meters, scattered throughout all corners of the system.

Our crews have been working in challenging conditions since the windstorm began Thursday morning, and the scale of damage remains challenging. To assist with restoration, we have called in reinforcements from Ravalli Electric and Sun River Electric, who are scheduled to arrive late this morning or early this afternoon. We greatly appreciate their support as we continue the hard work of safely restoring power to our members.

With so many locations affected, this report will remain general. Please know that if your meter is out, we are aware and your outage will be addressed. Crews are prioritizing safety and efficiency, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate these difficult conditions.

Ovando, Helmville

Three larger outages are impacting 223 meters in the Ovando and Helmville areas, as well as a few scattered smaller outages. Crews will be dispatched to these areas when they become available.
Seeley Lake, Placid Lake
66 meters are without power in Seeley Lake including Drew Lane, Club Lane, Riverview. A crew is working in this area now. An additional 56 meters are without power around Placid Lake and will be addressed as crews are available.

Swan Valley

Three crews are working to restore power to the remaining 268 meters in the Swan Valley. This area was the most heavily impacted by the Thursday windstorm, and we are hopeful that we can make good progress here today.

Check back for additional updates this evening as we work to restore power safely across the system, and as always thank you for your patience and understanding.

8:30 PM Storm Update – March 13

Crews have continued working throughout the day to restore power following the heavy, wet snow that moved through the area. Thanks to steady progress across the system, outages have been reduced significantly since this morning. As of 8:30 PM, approximately 249 members remain without power.

While we have come a long way since the peak outages earlier today, there is still much work ahead. Crews will be wrapping up for the day soon to grab a hot meal and get some rest. Work will resume tomorrow in any remaining areas.

I want to thank our members for their patience and understanding throughout this storm response. Power restoration in conditions like these is challenging, and we are grateful for the support and cooperation we have received.

I especially want to recognize the tremendous work of our line crews, support staff, and the contract crews from Potelco who have been working alongside MEC employees. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to safety in challenging weather conditions have made today’s progress possible.

Frenchtown / Huson

Power was restored to all locations in the Frenchtown and Huson areas.

Potomac / Woodworth / Ovando / Helmville

One crew is currently working in the Monture Creek area, and another in the Coopers Lake area. They are not likely to finish all areas tonight and will return to clean up any remaining issues as well as those in Helmville tomorrow.

Noon Storm Update – March 13

Heavy, wet snow blanketing the area has disrupted restoration efforts from yesterday’s wind event as we work to address new and emerging issues across the system. When crews finished work last night, approximately 400 members remained without power. Outages increased again early this morning, peaking at nearly 3,500 members when the transmission lines feeding Seeley Lake and the Swan Valley tripped offline.

The transmission issue has since been addressed, and service has been restored to many members. At this time, approximately 756 members remain without power. Crews continue to respond and make repairs across the service territory, but the heavy snow is creating new outages even as others are restored. Thankfully it has stopped snowing in Missoula, but this pattern will likely continue until the snowfall subsides across the system.

We appreciate our members’ patience as crews work through challenging conditions to safely restore power. If you experience an outage or see damaged lines, please report it and remember to stay clear of downed power lines. Here is a detailed look at where we stand:

Swan Valley / Condon Areas

When crews started their rest period last night, this was the only area with remaining outages. Three crews began their day here and another is on the way. Now that the mainline power is fully restored, they will turn their attention to taps including Shay Lake Road, Old Condon Loop, Stekar Trail, Kaufman Road, Glacier Creek Road, Styler Drive, Remicks Road, Washboard Drive, Scenic Drive, Lucky’s Lane, Pine Ridge Road, Old Barn Road, and others.

The following is a list of new outage areas resulting from this morning’s heavy snowfall:

Frenchtown / Huson

We currently have two crew addressing multiple issues in this area. Locations include Evaro Road, Sherman Gulch, Fairbanks Lane, La Casse Lane, Dusty Lane, and Kennedy Creek.

Potomac / Woodworth / Ovando / Helmville

We are aware of scattered outages including Blixit Creek, Monture Creek, Coopers Lake, and Helmville. A crew will be dispatched to address these issues once they become available.

Miller Creek

156 meters in the Miller Creek are without power and will be addressed by a crew currently working west of Missoula once that work is completed.

Seeley Lake

We have one crew working to restore power in multiple locations including the downtown area, Double Arrow, Boyscout Road, and Elaines Way.

If you have damage to report, please call and let us know. For your safety, stay well away from any downed power lines and treat them as energized. Thank you to every affected member for your patience as we work to restore power quickly and safely.

8:00 p.m. Windstorm Update March 12,2026

We are currently sitting at 472 meters without power and crews are beginning to stop for meals and rest period and will begin again in the morning. We do expect a few additional areas to be restored yet this evening.

Seeley Lake Town:
The final 72 meters along Hemlock, Morrel Creek and SOS Road remain out of power due to a broken pole along Hwy 83. A crew has been working on this replacement since late this afternoon, and we expect power to be restored this evening to all locations in this area.

Swan Valley – North of the Summit:
Every available crew is working in this area. The broken pole near mile marker 57 on Highway 83 has been replaced and they are working to get power restored to the north end of the system tonight.
Nearly all mainline repairs have been made, but a number of taps remain. Some of these locations include Salmon Prairie Road, Old Condon Loop, Stekar Trail, Kaufman Road, Glacier Creek Road, Styler Drive, Washboard Drive, Scenic Drive, Lucky’s Lane, Pine Ridge Road, Old Barn Road, and others. If you are still without power tonight, crews will return in the morning with a goal of getting power restored to all locations tomorrow.

Rock Creek:
While patrolling the Rock Creek outage late this afternoon, the crew identified a broken pole that serves three meters. A crew is onsite making repairs and expect this to be completed tonight.
If you have damage to report, please call and let us know. For your safety, stay well away from any downed power lines and treat them as energized.

1:00 p.m. Windstorm Update

In our earlier update this morning, we reported that damage was primarily concentrated in the Seeley–Swan Valley area. Since that time, additional damage has been reported in and around Seeley Lake, and we currently have 662 meters without power.

Seeley Lake Town:
The transmission line feeding Seeley Lake Town tripped offline mid-morning. Crews have restored power to most of the town and the Seeley Lake substation. That should have restored power to nearly all meters south of the summit on Highway 83. Additionally, outages remain in the Morrell Creek and SOS Road areas due to a broken pole. A contract crew from Potelco is enroute to begin repairs.

Swan Valley – North of the Summit:
Every available crew is working in this area. We have identified a broken pole near mile marker 57 on Highway 83 that will need to be replaced before power can be restored to the north end of the system. A crew is enroute to begin this work now.
We are also aware of lines down and broken crossarms in several locations including Old Mill Road, Salmon Prairie Road, Old Condon Loop, Stekar Trail, Kaufman Road, Glacier Creek Road, Styler Drive, Washboard Drive, Scenic Drive, Lucky’s Lane, Pine Ridge Road, Old Barn Road, and others. Many of these repair locations are on the mainline and will need to be addressed before we can attempt to restore power in these locations.

Rock Creek:
We are aware of three meters without power in the Rock Creek area, and a crew on site and responding to address those outages at this time.
If you have damage to report, please call and let us know. For your safety, stay well away from any downed power lines and treat them as energized.
