Our annual district meetings begin September 14! If you haven’t already marked your calendar, now is the time.

Notice to all MEC Members:

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are now in effect throughout much of Western Montana, including most areas served by Missoula Electric Cooperative (MEC). These restrictions reflect the heightened wildfire danger caused by extremely dry fuels, hot temperatures, and continued fire activity across the region. As part of MEC’s ongoing commitment to wildfire prevention and public safety, we are taking additional precautions while operating and maintaining our electric system during this period of elevated fire risk. Our crews remain vigilant and are prepared to respond to any service interruptions or system issues while following enhanced safety protocols designed to help reduce the risk of wildfire ignition. In the event of an outage, restoration efforts will require additional inspections and safety assessments before power can be restored. These measures help ensure that electrical equipment, power lines, and surrounding areas can be returned to service safely and without creating additional fire hazards.

Members should be aware that outage restoration times may be longer than normal when wildfire risk is elevated and additional safety procedures are required. MEC crews will continue working diligently to restore power as safely and efficiently as possible while prioritizing the safety of our members, employees, and communities.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenging conditions and work together to help protect the people, property, and natural resources of Western Montana.

Red Flag Warning in Effect for All MEC Service Territory

Western Montana is currently under a Red Flag Warning, including all areas served by Missoula Electric Cooperative (MEC). During Red Flag Warnings, MEC places system protection settings at the most sensitive level possible to help reduce wildfire risk and protect our members, communities, and natural resources.

As part of these enhanced safety measures, any outage that occurs during a Red Flag Warning requires MEC crews to patrol all line sections downstream of the protective device that operated before power can be safely restored. These additional inspections are necessary to ensure there are no hazards or signs of possible equipment-related fire activity.

Because of these heightened protection settings and required line patrols, outage restoration times may be longer than normally expected if an outage occurs during this event.

We appreciate our members’ patience and understanding as we follow these stricter protocols to help keep our communities safe throughout this Red Flag Warning. MEC crews will continue working diligently to restore service as safely and quickly as conditions allow.

1:30 a.m. Outage Update
As of 1:30 a.m., 1,784 members remain without power, down from a high of approximately 3,500 shortly after the storm passed. Power has been fully restored to the town of Seeley Lake and areas around the Wye and Big Flat.
Crews continue to take extra precautions, including detailed line patrols before attempting to restore power. Although the storm brought some rain, it was very spotty and fire risk remains high.
Here is where crews are currently working:
• Huson: This area has the largest remaining outage, affecting 1,072 members. A crew is currently patrolling lines and will attempt partial restoration in the coming hours. We are aware of damage in the Nine Mile Valley that must be addressed before that area can be fully restored.
• Seeley Lake/Clearwater Junction: A crew is completing restoration of the final outage in the Double Arrow area and will then head south to Clearwater Junction, where just over 200 meters remain without power.
• Potomac: A crew is restoring power to the remaining 15 meters in the Sherman Gulch area near Missoula. From there they will proceed to the Bonner-Potomac area, where 468 meters remain without power.
We are also aware of two smaller outages: one south of Florence in the Maroon Court and Gunsight Lane areas, and another north of Seeley Lake near the summit. Crews will address these outages as soon as they become available.
Crew assignments and restoration priorities are subject to change as emergency conditions arise. Thank you for your patience as crews continue working through the night.

We are aware of multiple outages affecting members following the storms that moved through our service area earlier this evening. We have received reports of damage and downed power lines in several locations.

The areas currently experiencing the largest outages include Huson, Frenchtown, Potomac, Seeley Lake, and Florence. Crews are responding, assessing damage, and patrolling lines. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Please stay well away from all downed power lines and always assume they are energized. Thank you for your patience as our crews work to restore power safely.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of wildfire. It’s that time of year again when extreme conditions require additional precautions across our electric system.
Missoula Electric Cooperative’s operational risk models are indicating extreme conditions across portions of our service area over the next few days, including Helmville, Ovando, Potomac, Clinton and the Missoula Valley.
Crews are working today to adjust system settings in response to these conditions. These protective settings are designed to reduce the possibility that electrical equipment could contribute to a wildfire. However, they may also result in more frequent outages because the system will respond more quickly when it detects a potential problem.
Under extreme conditions, outages may also last longer. Before restoring power, crews may need to patrol affected lines and confirm that it is safe to re-energize the system.
We understand how disruptive outages can be and appreciate your patience. The safety of our members, employees and communities remains our highest priority.
