This client came in with a manual swapped ex-police cruiser Ford Crown Victoria, looking for a place to keep his phone while driving
Here’s a look into the engineering design process of this solution:
I began by making a cardboard template of the empty space in the center console, which I then took a picture of and brought into Solidworks to trace
Before the customer left, I also used the LiDAR scanner on my phone to capture the interior of the car. This scan is used to verify the design wouldn’t interfere with any of the components of the car, instead of having the customer come multiple times for test fitting
Once the design was finalized, it was prepped for slicing in the 3D software. It was printed with the negative space against the build plate, which is a bit unconventional for anyone familiar with 3D printing since this would require the use of supports; The benefit is having the build plate texture on the top surface to match the rest of the interior, which is also the reason for the secondary piece for the bottom of the indentation
While the client didn’t opt for it, the design also allows for wireless charging using a Q-charger on the underside of the insert
Overall, the design was a success and the client was extremely satisfied
