Your HVAC system does not consume refrigerant. So, where is the leak?
Refrigerant continuously travels through a closed system: the compressor, condenser, metering device and evaporator coil. It changes pressure, temperature and state along the way, absorbing heat from inside your home and rejecting it outside.
Under normal operation, that refrigerant does not disappear.
The refrigerant cycle (pictured left) is a closed loop. Refrigerant absorbs heat inside your home, carries it outside, releases that heat, then returns inside to repeat the process. The same refrigerant keeps circulating. It is not supposed to be used up.
If your system is low on refrigerant, there is a reason.
That is why our technicians perform leak checks instead of simply adding refrigerant and sending the system down the road.
Leaks can be large or small. They can leak quickly from an obvious failure point, or they can be microscopic and leak slowly for months. Some are easy to find and repair. Others can take hours to locate and address properly.
Depending on the system and situation, we use electronic leak detection, pressure testing, bubble testing and other diagnostic methods to locate the source of the loss.
Once we know where the refrigerant is going, we can give you an accurate recommendation:
Repair the leak.
Replace the failed component.
Or, when the age and condition of the equipment no longer justify the repair, discuss replacement.
Adding refrigerant without addressing the underlying problem can get a system cooling again, but it does not make the leak disappear.
