Casey Jones and other meteorology, telemetry, and data quality technicians from REI’s ROC II Subcontract at Wallops Island Flight Facility recently took a month-long trip to support the Poker Flat Research Range’s launch of the Polar Night Nitric Oxide (PolarNOx) experiment. Poker Flat is a sounding rocket firing range operated by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and is affiliated with NASA’s science mission.

The mission, which you can read more about at the link below, was designed to study the settling of nitric oxide created by the aurora (also known as the northern lights) and its effects on the Earth’s ozone layer. The experiment was launched on Jan. 27th and reached an altitude of 161 miles.

Casey sent us the following beautiful pictures from their trip showcasing the range, the launch, and other related activities such as weather balloon launches—all in the beautiful landscape and snow of Alaska. According to Casey, they experienced temperatures as low as -40 degrees F!
