The hinge post carries the full weight of that leaf every single time it swings, and a gate gets swung a few thousand times a year. Set it deeper and heavier than the rest of the line and it still shuts true in ten years. Skip that and you will be shimming it by spring.

The corners and the gate are where a vinyl job gets judged. Anybody can run a straight line down the back of a lot. Getting the return square against the house, and hanging a gate in it that still latches in July, is the part that takes the time.

It is the most yard you can safely close in per dollar, and in black it reads far closer to ornamental than the shiny galvanized everybody pictures. The dog has never once commented on the difference.

Every post set and set straight before one panel slid in. Vinyl punishes a lazy post line worse than wood does, because nothing in it will flex to cover the mistake. You either got the line right or the whole run tells on you.

The color is baked into the powder coat, not brushed on top of it. That is why it does not peel like a painted rail and does not fade out on the sunny side. When the pollen falls, hit it with a hose. That is the entire maintenance plan.

Open bank down to the water before. Black aluminum holding the line after, without taking one bit of the view away. That is the trade off people worry about most and it is the one we spend the most time getting right.

Wood is still what most people picture when they picture a fence, and there is a reason it never went out of style. Built right it weathers to silver in a couple of seasons and looks better for it.
