Modern vehicles are equipped with an ever-expanding suite of advanced technologies that are fundamentally transforming the field of highway vehicle accident reconstruction. This presentation explores the critical intersection of this new technology with the established scientific craft of highway vehicle accident reconstruction. We will delve into the capabilities of systems like Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) as defined by SAE J3016, passenger vehicle Event Data Recorders (EDRs) governed by SAE J1698, and Heavy Vehicle Event Data Recorders (HVEDRs) under SAE J2728.
This talk will demonstrate how the invaluable data streams produced by these systems—capturing everything from pre-crash speed, steering and brake inputs, and the operational status of safety features like ABS and collision mitigation systems—provide unprecedented insight into the moments leading up to a collision. We will examine real-world case studies illustrating how this digital evidence is meticulously gathered, preserved, and analyzed. Furthermore, we'll showcase how this electronic data is synthesized with traditional reconstruction methodologies, such as 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, and vehicle crush analysis, to create a comprehensive and scientifically robust understanding of crash causation and sequence.
By leveraging the rich data from today's advanced vehicles, accident reconstruction professionals can more accurately determine not only what happened, but why it happened. This deeper understanding is paramount for a variety of stakeholders, from legal and insurance professionals to automotive engineers and safety advocates. Ultimately, the fusion of advanced technology and forensic engineering is a powerful catalyst for enhancing vehicle safety, refining infrastructure, and fulfilling the ultimate goal of saving lives on our highways.
