Formula 1 is a global championship, with the vast majority of teams all located within a tight radius in England. While America has produced two World Champion drivers, Phil Hill (1961) and Mario Andretti (1978), there are a growing number of Americans working within the sport, especially on the technical side. Join us on August 5th to hear from two SoCal locals about what life in Formula 1 is like in 2026.

Hailing from Newport Beach, Prescott Campbell currently works on the Williams F1 Team as a Graduate Structural Engineer, having recently graduated from Oxford Brookes University’s Motorsport Engineering program in the UK. In his final years of study he led the university’s Formula Student EV team: Oxford Brookes Racing. OBR is the UK’s top team and one of the largest in the world, with over 500 volunteering members. As a driver, Prescott won the 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Championship along with a scholarship to compete in Indycar’s junior formula circuit. He stopped racing in 2021 when he received his first offer to work at Williams, transitioning his career aspirations from driving to engineering in Formula 1 ever since.

Rami Edirisinghe is a South Bay native who went to Georgia Tech for his undergraduate studies. He was a part of the GT Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge team where he took part in the great American tradition of engine swapping powerful engines into tiny cars. After graduation he worked at Advanced Clutch Technology as an R&D engineer. While at ACT he volunteered time with Jager Racing, a Willow Springs based time attack team as an engineer, focusing on development of the team's engineering program. He eventually went back for a masters at Cal State Fullerton, specializing in Thermal Fluids. He now works at Williams F1 in the systems simulation department, primarily focusing on powertrain cooling and mechanical systems simulation. On his summer shutdowns you can find him working on “Hondegger” - his Honda swapped 1975 BMW 2002 tribute car to the Heidegger 2002 that won it's class at LeMans in 1975.
