If you are a home owner, or are looking at purchasing a house this information is for you.
The HVAC industry is facing significant changes in the coming months, and if you're a homeowner or planning to become one, it's essential to be aware of what's happening. A new refrigerant is being introduced in AC systems, and unlike previous transitions, this one is happening much more abruptly. The last major refrigerant change began in 2003 but wasn’t widely implemented by manufacturers until 2007, giving the industry time to adapt and experiment. However, with the introduction of R32 and R454a, there’s no such adjustment period. In the past, it was possible to replace individual components of a system, like the condenser, to keep things running until a full replacement could be done. Unfortunately, that won't be an option with the new refrigerants, as the entire system will need to be replaced. This change is expected to affect the availability of parts and could take up to 20 years to fully implement as manufacturers hold parts until warranties expire. If you anticipate needing a new HVAC system soon, it might be wise to act quickly before the transition becomes mandatory, as prices are expected to rise along with the new requirements. Keep in mind, HVAC contractors didn’t request this change, and our goal is always to minimize disruptions for homeowners.
