The Wilmington Police Department, Vermont would like to extend our appreciation to Greg Nido and Guy E. Nido Inc.
Several weeks ago, WPD was contacted with an urgent request to help a local household with children that did not have any heat. This was just before there was a forecasted several-day sub-zero cold snap. If a heating solution could not be worked out, the children would have to be sent to temporary emergency placements, which would have been a burden on an already overloaded safety net system. WPD was advised that all other charities and assistance programs had been contacted, but they did not have the means to assist. WPD contacted Greg at Nido's, and a plan was made for WPD to use/raise charitable funds to cover the cost. Within ten minutes of the phone call, heating fuel was delivered by Nido's. Emergency averted and the bill? WPD was later told there would not be a bill for the delivery. THANK YOU!

The UnAffordable Heat Act is moving quickly through the Vermont Senate. Also known as S.5, the legislation would require fuel dealers to get their customers to buy less of the fuel they sell— or else pay someone else to do it for them. It is expected to add at least 70-cents to a gallon of heating fuel. The coldness of the Heat Act was revealed when VFDA asked for a simple six month delay so that the complicated program is not implemented in January during the height of the heating season when our customers need us most. The response was both revealing and disturbing: "If we want less dependence on fossil fuels….. make it so they can't deliver.” The policy has the potential to disrupt the distribution network of an essential commodity that 4 out of 5 Vermonters depend on for heat, hot water, and/or cooking. But that may be the point.

Matt Cota, VFDA's advocate in the statehouse, delivered the closing argument this week. Cota asked the Senators on the Natural Resources Committee to make twelve significant changes to the legislation. Watch it here.

None of the suggestions were adopted and all five Senators are expected to approve the legislation later this morning.

What happens next?
Next it moves to the Appropriations Committee. The seven members of that committee must decide whether to spend $1.2 million on consultants and lawyers to construct this "Rube Goldberg contraption.” If they agree to spend the money, a vote will be called on the Senate floor where all thirty Senators will get to decide.

Whenever you go to the Gas Station on Rt 9 West, please remain in your vehicle as we are still a FULL SERVE station and we will come to you. This is to limit person to person contact as much as is possible.

ALL employees will be wearing masks upon entering private residences and we ask that our customers do the same.
