This half-bath renovation is a good example of how much character you can introduce into a relatively small space.

The patterned floor brings personality. Benjamin Moore's Bavarian Forest gives the beadboard a rich, distinctive color, while the pedestal sink, brass fixtures, and carefully selected lighting bring everything together.

For this project, we worked with the existing cabinetry and countertops, introducing a marble mosaic backsplash with small brass inlays.

The geometric pattern adds interest without overwhelming the surrounding finishes. The brass catches the light, while the marble complements the countertops.

With a pattern this distinctive, layout becomes especially important. Cuts around outlets, windows, and corners all influence how the finished installation looks.

Small rooms leave little room for overlooked details.

This half bath needed more than a change of fixtures.

We addressed the subfloor before installing the patterned tile, then brought the room together with deep teal beadboard, a pedestal sink, and brass finishes.

In a room this size, every decision becomes more noticeable. The proportions, transitions, and finishes all need to work together.

The homeowners were exceptionally accommodating throughout the project, which we certainly appreciated.

The finished bathroom was handed over this week with no remaining punch-list items.

It's interesting how a $50,000 vehicle has become a fairly ordinary purchase, yet a bathroom renovation at the same price can sound downright outrageous.

It's interesting what we've come to consider reasonable.

A vehicle loses value with age and mileage. Eventually, we'll replace it with another one. Meanwhile, the bathroom we use every single day is somehow supposed to last indefinitely, preferably without costing too much.

Of course, not every bathroom needs a $50,000 renovation. That's hardly the point.

The point is how differently we perceive value.

A properly remodeled bathroom isn't just an assortment of expensive tile and fixtures. It's years of daily use, thoughtful planning, skilled labor, and the work behind the walls that most people will never see.

There's nothing wrong with buying a nice vehicle. But there's something to be said for investing in the place you call home, too.

Especially when you consider how much of your life you actually spend there.

A beautiful floor is only as good as what's underneath it.

It's easy to appreciate a finished tile floor. The pattern, the colors, the way it ties the room together.

What's harder to appreciate is the work that disappears beneath it.

Before setting a single tile, we have to consider the substrate, movement, layout, and transitions. These aren't particularly exciting details, but overlooking them can turn an expensive renovation into an expensive repair.

For this kitchen, we installed an uncoupling membrane and carefully planned the tile layout before moving forward with installation.

The homeowner shouldn't have to know the difference between an uncoupling membrane and cement board, or which one is appropriate for their project. That's our responsibility.

The best work isn't always the work you can see. But you'll certainly notice when it wasn't done right.

A kitchen doesn't get used like a showroom.

It has to work on busy mornings, during family dinners, and when three people somehow end up needing the same countertop.

Good materials and attractive finishes certainly matter. But so do the things that aren't immediately obvious in photographs.

Counter space. Storage. Lighting. Traffic patterns. The relationship between the appliances and the areas where people actually work.

A beautiful kitchen that constantly gets in your way isn't particularly well designed.

The goal is to create a space that looks good when everything is put away, but works just as well when life gets messy.

That's something worth considering long before choosing cabinet colors and countertops.
