⚡ Cooler mornings are finally rolling into Central Florida, and that means space heaters are coming out of the closet. A few quick safety tips:

• Plug space heaters straight into a wall outlet, never into a power strip or extension cord. They pull a lot of power and can overheat cords.
• Keep them at least 3 feet from couches, curtains, bedding and anything that can burn.
• Choose one with tip-over and overheat shut-off, and turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
• If the plug or outlet feels hot, the breaker trips, or the lights dim when it kicks on, stop using it and have the circuit checked.

Dryer tip: give your dryer some breathing room! 🧺

When the dryer gets pushed tight against the wall, the vent hose behind it gets crushed or kinked. That traps hot, lint-filled air, makes loads take longer, and raises the risk of a dryer fire.

✅ Leave about 4 inches between the dryer and the wall
✅ Pull it out once in a while and check the hose isn't flattened or bent sharply
✅ Look for lint piling up where the hose meets the wall
✅ If clothes are taking two cycles to dry, the vent is likely restricted.

A quick check today can prevent a big problem tomorrow.

Quick AC tip: let your vents breathe! 🌬️

Furniture, rugs and curtains sitting on top of supply vents or in front of the big return grille make your AC work harder, run longer and cost more, and in our Florida humidity it can leave rooms feeling sticky.

A few easy habits:
• Keep about a foot of clear space in front of every vent and return.
• Don't close vents in unused rooms. It doesn't save money and can actually strain the system.
• Vacuum dust off the vent and return grilles every month or two.
• If one room stays warm with everything open, the ductwork may need a look.

Ceiling fan wobbling or making noise? Here's a quick check 🌀

Turn the fan off (and flip its breaker off before touching anything), then:
• Tighten the screws holding each blade and blade bracket. Loose screws are the #1 cause of wobble.
• Wipe the dust off the blades. Uneven dust buildup can throw the balance off.
• If it still wobbles, a cheap balancing kit from the hardware store usually fixes it.

Call a pro if the fan sways at the mount, the light flickers, you hear buzzing or smell something hot, or it hangs from a regular light box instead of a fan-rated box. A heavy fan on the wrong box can come loose.

Bonus Florida tip: blades should spin counterclockwise (looking up) for a cooling breeze, so you can nudge the thermostat up a degree or two and save on AC.

Dryer vent tip: check the vent hood OUTSIDE your house! 🌀
That little louvered cover on your exterior wall is where lint loves to pile up. When the flaps get packed with lint, hot air can't escape, your dryer runs longer, and lint inside the vent becomes a real fire risk.
Quick check: run the dryer and go look outside. The flaps should open and you should feel strong, warm airflow. If the flaps stay shut, look fuzzy, or you see lint on the wall below, it's time for a cleaning.
With the dryer off, you can pull loose lint off the hood by hand, but the lint further inside the duct needs a proper brush cleaning. Most Central Florida homes should have the full vent cleaned once a year.

🧊 Ice on your AC lines? Don't ignore it!

If you see frost or ice on the copper lines going into your outdoor unit (or on the indoor coil), your AC is freezing up. That means it isn't cooling right, and running it that way can damage the compressor.

What to do:
✅ Turn the system OFF at the thermostat and set the fan to ON so the ice can melt (this can take a few hours). Never chip at the ice.
✅ Check your air filter. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of a frozen AC here in Central Florida.
✅ Make sure supply vents and return grilles are open and not blocked by furniture.
✅ Keep a towel handy, since melting ice can overflow the drain pan.

If it freezes up again after a fresh filter, it may be low refrigerant, a weak blower or a dirty coil, and that's a job for a pro.
