Powering Asia’s Future:
TMEIC’s Motor Drive Systems
TMEIC Corporation (TMEIC) was established in 2003 through the integration of the industrial systems divisions of Toshiba Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Since then, TMEIC has supported the global development of industrial and social infrastructure by leveraging synergies in its core competencies of industrial systems, power electronics equipment, and motors. Building on the technological and business foundations inherited from its parent companies, TMEIC has expanded its business scope through initiatives such as entering the renewable energy sector and strengthening global operations.

TMEIC Asia Pte. Ltd. (TMEIC Asia), based in Singapore, serves as the regional headquarters in Southeast Asia. It oversees subsidiaries in Indonesia and Thailand and has liaison offices in Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) and Taiwan (Kaohsiung), providing products, engineering, and other services to customers throughout Southeast Asia from six locations in five countries and regions.

As a company dedicated to supporting industrial and social infrastructure, TMEIC has embarked on a new initiative to achieve a carbon-neutral society. TMEIC has formulated a “Growth 20” growth strategy extending through to 2030 and is now moving into its next stage. Consolidated net sales reached 300 billion yen in fiscal 2022, double the initial amount at the time of the Company’s inception, and continued to increase in fiscal 2023. Under its Growth 20 plan, TMEIC has set a business objective of achieving sales of 500 billion yen.

TMEIC’s W250 & W350 series Next Gen UPS with high efficiency using CSTBT IGBT
TMEIC’s W250 and W350 series UPS systems with its very innovative 3 level pulse width modulation (PWM) converter and inverter combined with an advanced CSTBT, delivers industry-leading efficiency and also provides a unique reverse power flow feature for the UPS. This type of regenerative UPS resolved not just power quality issues, but also makes it the only suitable UPS for regenerative applications.

In today’s world of carbon neutrality targets, having the highest possible energy efficiency is very critical for every user of any power equipment. Thanks to advanced power circuit topology and the use of robust CSTBT IGBT as a power semiconductor, TMEIC’s Next Gen UPS achieved high double conversion efficiency up to 96.5% for the normal operating range as compared with any conventional UPS products

TMEIC’s UPS systems are proved to be a game changer for the global market, which successfully mitigated all power quality issues, provides highly efficient double conversion (AC to DC and then DC to AC), along with the functionality of reverse power flow, which helped many critical applications. This power circuit topology is a transformerless design, which uses a 3 level PWM T type converter, a double DC-DC IGBT based chopper for battery charging, and 3 level PWM T type inverter. Coupled with the output LC filter, it provides a clear sinusoidal waveform at its output. Also, coupled with the input LCL filter, it mitigates the harmonics to meet IEEE519 specifications on powerline side harmonics.

For backup power, when the mains power fails, many types of batteries could be effectively interfaced with TMEIC’s Next Gen UPS very safely, as the charging current is almost ripple free due to a double DC-DC IGBT based chopper, as shown below. Standard lead acid batteries, VRLA, advanced VRLA batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, and recently, lithium ion batteries can be used with this TMEIC UPS, based on the user’s requirement of time of backup.

Over the years, TMEIC has expanded its offerings beyond conventional products to help customers better meet the needs of an evolving market while achieving their environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) goals. In particular, in the Vietnamese market, it is supplying photovoltaic (PV) inverters to solar power plants, and has built a responsive infrastructure for maintenance and after-sales service, leveraging its legacy to effectively serve customer needs and provide value-added products and services.
