That is a wrap on the BIAS Final Conference! 🎉✨ A massive thank you to everyone who joined us.

What a truly fantastic couple of days in Leiden. The event was a resounding success, bringing together a brilliant mix of researchers, HR professionals, policymakers, and AI developers.

Tackling algorithmic bias in the digital labour market is not a challenge that can be solved in isolation.

That is why it was so inspiring to see such a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in one room, all focused on the exact same goal: mitigating bias in AI recruitment.

Together, we explored both the complex challenges and the incredible opportunities surrounding the development of fair, inclusive, and responsible automated hiring systems.

The collaborative energy was exceptional, and it proves that the future of HR technology is in good hands! ❤️

As you move through the automated pipeline, from being scanned and keyword-checked to being ranked and filtered, you are entirely at the mercy of an algorithm.

And whilst these systems are incredibly fast, they are not always fair.

If an AI tool is trained on flawed historical data, it can automatically downgrade brilliant candidates based on hidden proxies for age, gender, or background. The result? You are silently rejected before a human recruiter even knows you exist.

Does AI speak the same language when it comes to bias? 🌍🤖

As AI tools become the norm in the modern workplace, most research on algorithmic bias remains strictly English-centric. But a new paper from the BIAS Project proves that AI bias is deeply shaped by language and local culture.

Researchers Catherine Ikae, Mascha Kurpicz-Briki (Berner Fachhochschule | Haute école spécialisée bernoise), Guðbjörg Linda Rafnsdóttir and Ragna Kemp Haraldsdóttir (Háskóli Íslands) tested several generations of GPT models in German and Icelandic. They discovered that:
🌍 Context is everything: Prompts framed with positive social interactions significantly reduce AI bias, whilst negative framing amplifies prejudice.
🔣 Translation is not a solution: Bias levels differ systematically across languages. German prompts were generally more stable, whilst Icelandic prompts showed greater variability.
🫣 The rise of 'avoidance': Instead of resolving bias, newer models (like GPT-4 and GPT-5) increasingly refuse to answer sensitive questions, resorting to safety-driven non-commitment.

We cannot rely on English-only fixes for a global labour market. To build trustworthy tech, we must evaluate AI across diverse linguistic landscapes.

The summer getaway has officially begun. Across Europe, HR professionals are turning on their 'Out of Office' replies, packing their bags, and heading off for some well-deserved rest. 🏖️💻

Whilst human teams are at the beach, automated CV screening systems and matching algorithms keep running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

And herein lies the catch!

Without active human oversight during the holiday season, the risk of automated systems quietly and unfairly filtering out diverse, highly qualified talent actually increases.

This is precisely the challenge the BIAS Project seeks to address.

At the BIAS Project, we are developing the multi-disciplinary research required to build AI applications that are inclusive by design. We want to ensure that when a system works unsupervised, it evaluates capability, never demographics.

Today is World Youth Skills Day. 🎓💡

Across the globe, millions of young people are putting in the hard work, mastering new trades, completing educational programmes, and preparing to enter the labour market.

They are doing their part. But at the very first stage of the hiring process, they are likely to encounter an AI screening tool before they meet a human interviewer.

And this is where the code gets dangerous. 🚨

If that software inherits historical prejudices, it reduces a young person’s hard-earned potential to a statistical blind spot. It looks past capability and gets stuck on a name, a gender, or a postcode.

Whilst young people are working to get ready for the market, the BIAS Project is working to get the market ready for them. By developing practical tools to mitigate algorithmic bias in HR technology, we are helping to level the digital playing field.

In the game of hiring, bias shouldn't dictate who gets on the pitch. ⚽

As we celebrate global talent and fair play at the World Cup, we must ask: are our digital recruitment systems playing by the same rules?

Today, automated CV screeners act as the first line of digital referees. If trained on biased historical data, they risk unfairly sidelining brilliant, diverse candidates before the match even begins. AI should be an impartial judge, not a gatekeeper of prejudice.
