🗒 There are several types of respirators:

1. Full face respirators, which cover the eyes, nose, and mouth

2. Half face respirators, which cover the nose and mouth

3. Filtering facepiece respirators, which are disposable respirators that cover the nose and mouth

✅ Both full face and half face respirators have a flexible gasket at the edges creating a good seal. Respirators with rubberized seals often uses changeable filter cartridges. Filter cartridges provide flexibility, as they can be changed depending on the type of airborne hazard present. These cartridges are colour coded for identification and should be replaced after a predetermined amount of time or exposure.

Other commonly used types of respirators are filtering facepiece respirators, such as dust masks, N95 masks, and FFP1/2/3 respirators. These respirators can be quite difficult to fit. Commonly, the only contact between the respirator and the skin is usually the border of the respirator, which in some cases can be quite narrow, and most importantly, does not function like a gasket. This makes it easier for a leak to develop.

✅ In a recent study from Cambridge University, seven people each tried on five different models of filtering facepiece respirators. Only three of the seven people were able to find a respirator which fit them correctly. Out of the 35 fit tests performed, only seven had an adequate fit (author - Eugenia O’Kelly, University of Cambridge).

Airborne hazards and your lungs

🗒 Industrial environment is full of organic and inorganic airborne hazards. Some hazards, such as toxic gasses, pass through your lungs into your circulatory system and can cause systemic problems. Other hazards, such as asbestos, spores, and silica dust cause damage to the lung tissue. Irritation from airborne hazards can cause lung inflammation. Respiratory hazards can also damage the upper parts of the respiratory tract.

☝ Airborne hazards cause disease, and it is important to protect against them. The best way to protect the lungs is to block the hazardous substances from entering the body. Respirators are an effective way of doing this if (and only if!) the respirator fits well.

☝ Why does UNIX 6100 mask have three sizes, while UNIX 5000/5100 has one universal size?

🗒 The answer is simple: their main difference is face seal. UNIX 6100 is available with a single face seal, because this is a lightweight model with a more compact and comfortable design. Its weight does not exceed 480 g.

UNIX 5000/5100 has a double face seal. A person with any head parameters can wear this mask: two face seal lines create a tight connection between the mask and human skin. Therefore, this product does not require several sizes.

☝ Importance of fit

Every time you take a breath, air rushes into your lungs. While it is easy to take breathing for granted, maintaining a healthy respiratory system is essential. Respirators are an effective means of protecting the whole of the respiratory system. Respirators work by sealing off the nose and mouth from the environment. For a respirator to fully protect you, all incoming air must pass through a set of filters which remove targeted harmful substances.

Sadly, humans have a poor ability to ascertain if a respirator fits. Fit testing should be performed every time you get a new size or model of respirator to ensure it fits properly.

🗒 Before each use, the user must check the correct assembly of the respirator and check its correct donning and tightness, since the effectiveness of protection significantly depends on this:

1. Put on the assembled respirator, so that the mask fits snugly to the face without distortions and heavy pressure. Place the palm of the hand over the exhalation valve cover and exhale gently. If the mask bulges slightly and no air leakage is detected, a proper fit has been achieved.

2. If air leakage is detected, check the tightness of the mask. Remove the filters. Cover the holes in the saddles of inhalation valve on the side surfaces with your hands. Take 2-3 deep breaths and hold your breath for a while. If it is impossible to breathe and the mask shrinks slightly, then the mask fits snugly to the face, the size of the mask is chosen correctly. If air passes under the mask and it straightens out, then you should provide additional checking or try a mask of a different size.

💥 Zelinsky Group visited A+A exhibition

A+A 2021 was a successful event for the industry. The trade fair presented once again products and solutions for safety, security and health at work. More than 1200 exhibitors from 56 nations presented themselves to the trade visitors in 10 halls at the Düsseldorf exhibition center.

📝 The exhibition clearly demonstrated the development trends of the PPE market. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many manufacturers to reconsider plans and expand their range.

A+A was dominated by RPE manufacturers. Many companies have added new devices to their product range in order to be adapted to new requirements, for example, the British company JSP has made it possible to install a protective filter on the exhalation valve. Manufacturers of safety glasses, in particular, the French company Bolle, presented collections for medical personnel at A+A.

✅ Now manufacturers pay great attention to ergonomics and user-friendliness. Solutions with forced air supply in various designs stood out strongly.

📢 How to maintain the protective properties and service life of UNIX 6100 full face respirator with protection against fogging and scratches?

📝 Catch the checklist:

✅ Never wipe the glass dry!

After work, wash the product in warm water and soap, clean the glass from dirt and leave the coated surface slightly damp, let the glass dry naturally. After all, if you wipe it dry, the coating may be damaged.

✅ No sun and no drying on batteries!

Masks must be stored in closed space at an air temperature of + 5 to +25 ° C and a relative humidity of no more than 65%. The ingress of moisture and direct exposure to sunlight, as well as the thermal effect of heating devices must be excluded, since these factors will lead to a reduction in service life.

✅ Protect glass from aggressive substances!

Chemicals with acids, oils, alkalis, silicon should never come into contact with the anti-fog coating. Otherwise, the coating will deteriorate.

✅ Do not disassemble the mask yourself, if this option is not indicated in the user’s manual!

You may violate the design and tightness. And this will entail the leakage of harmful substances into the inner mask space.

✅ Warm it up!

After storing masks at an air temperature below 0 ° C, before use, they must be kept for at least 24 hours at an air temperature of 20 ± 5 ° C.

☝🏻 High-filtration masks only work when they fit

📝 It is considered that a high-filtration mask should offer better protection than a surgical or fabric mask. But it's not all that simple. To be highly protective, these masks must properly fit the user. Unfortunately, users aren’t good at assessing whether their mask fits. Often they use a self-assessment method to check fit, but this method is truly unreliable and increases the risk of becoming infected.

✅ In medicine, a different method is used to test masks: a substance with a certain taste is released into the air around the mask wearers. What's the point? If they can taste the substance, it indicates that the mask doesn’t fit well. For example, an aroma diffuser can be used to aerolise saccharin dissolved in water into an enclosed space. The users make sure they can taste this without a mask on, and then they taste it with a mask donned. The wearer can move the diffuser around so that its v***r touches all edges of the mask.

📅 Since April 2019, Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been adopted. This is a European technical regulation that is valid in the territory of the European Union.

According to its requirements, the manual must be presented in the official language of the country where the products are supplied, because users from different countries should understand clearly how to use PPE.

By the time the new Regulation came out, we promptly updated all valid European certificates and technical documentation.

The correct selection of appropriate RPE is one of the most important steps in the RPE lifecycle process. Failing to select, fit-test, use, store, and maintain correct RPE will lead to exposure of hazardous substances at work.

Extra precautions should be taken when working in confined spaces, due to the potential for reduced oxygen levels. It is never suitable to use a filtering respirator in a confined space. A breathing apparatus should be provided instead.
