Today we feature the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge, a project implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways, thru its Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) and funded thru China grant.

The 680-meter bridge which connects the two (2) busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo in Manila, is expected to cater around 30,000 vehicles upon its opening to motorists which is targeted by this upcoming Holy Week.

The project features a 70-meter long, basket handle-type tied arch bridge superstructure, among the first of its kind in the Philippines. It will not only serve as a major thoroughfare for vehicles, but will also be an iconic bridge for bikers and pedestrians alike.

Modern and innovative engineering technologies have also been utilized in this flagship project, such as form travelers and slide jacking, among others, which showcases the country's transition into the new age of infrastructure development.

LAKERS IN 6?

In today's feature problem, we try to predict a hypothetical NBA Finals prediction between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers, using one of the fundamental probability distributions: the Binomial Distribution.

Solution is a 2-part series applying the formula for Binomial Distribution, and using Pascal's Triangle.

P.S. Kalma lang tayo mga Nets fans 😂 This is just purely hypothetical and not based on any advanced metric.

On this feature problem, we try to answer a very simple worded problem on calculating the work done on pumping water, using two possible approaches:

Approach 1: Using Varignon's Theorem (https://youtu.be/nB7n8lt40lU)
Approach 2: Using Integral Calculus (https://youtu.be/KlPX2l8nbVg)

Commonly asked in the CE board exams, did you know that for a simply supported beam, the supports must be placed at about 0.207L from the ends to minimize the magnitude of the maximum bending moment.

In our latest upload, we try to revisit how to derive such formula by answering a similar worded problem.

JUST IN:

The May 2021 Civil Engineering Board Exam has just officially been postponed via latest PRC Resolution, in consideration of the safety of the examinees against COVID-19.

Let us all keep safe amidst this resurging pandemic and hope for a successful vaccine roll out before November 2021!

Nagkaroon na ng large-scale announcement ang PRC regarding the postponement ng upcoming board exams, including May boards, pero it seems like wala pa ring clear announcement for CE board exam.

As it stands there's only two (2) weeks left in the filing of applications, and maybe we get clear announcements on or before March 18.

Let us all stay vigilant!

In our latest lecture video, I decided to share one of my favorite beam deflection techniques - one that I call the 'method of pseudo-cantilevers'. This technique is a very interesting and unique way of going around deflection calculations, and might be a very powerful tool in some select cases.

In the article, several methods were introduced that could potentially diminish the carbon footprint of concrete. Some of the cited approaches are through CO2-infused cement mixes, or C02-curing (a.k.a. carbonation curing), all of which converts captured CO2 from gas to mineral, effectively reducing emissions.

Introduced also is the CO2-based "bendable" concrete. An engineered cementitious composite is created, increasing the tensile strain capacity of concrete by up to 300 to 500 times.

Definitely very interesting technologies to consider in the engineering and construction industry, both locally and internationally, considering that concrete is among the leading emitters of greenhouse gases.

The product created at the University of Michigan allows for thinner structures with less need for steel reinforcement.

Having a hard time calculating beam deflections? In this video, we'll be introducing a very interesting and powerful mathematical trick called Macaulay Functions, as we try to integrate it into our traditional Double Integration Method (DIM) of finding beam deflections.

In this video, we take a look at Macaulay functions, a very powerful technique used for expressing complex loading conditions into a single moment function. ...
