In partnership with Spectral Sciences Inc., Sceye has been awarded a NASA grant to deliver continuous and reliable Earth observation from the stratosphere.

In a new interview with Jeff Foust from SpaceNews, our founder and CEO, Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, shares how Sceye is redefining what’s possible from the stratosphere, from bridging the digital divide to transforming how we observe and protect our planet.

We’re proud to share that SoftBank Corp. has made a strategic investment in Sceye as part of our Series C round and has purchased a HAPS pre-commercial Japan flight in 2026.

As Junichi Miyakawa, President and CEO of SoftBank Corp., said: "High-altitude platform station technology will play a key role in expanding network area coverage to places that are difficult to reach with existing networks," adding that the services "will also provide a means of restoring communications when large-scale disasters strike."

Thank you to Fast Company for the in-depth exclusive on Sceye achieving the world’s first methane monitoring from the stratosphere.
From a fixed position at 65,000 feet, our High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) detected methane emissions in real time, revealing both super-emitters and smaller, previously undetected leaks that drive climate change.
“We can see the specific emitter and the rate of emissions in real time,” says Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, Sceye’s CEO. “And that’s entirely new.”
In partnership with the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), we’re now able to deliver continuous, high-resolution data that enables faster responses, stronger regulatory oversight, and greater accountability.

Last week, on October 24th, we completed a flawless launch and flight, which achieved all test objectives in the full characterization of our High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS). This marked the final flight in our 2024 Control Dynamics program, which accomplished the ambitious milestones of controlled relocation, full diurnal flight, and the ability to stay over an area of operation for extended periods of time. This pivotal step showcased readiness for our upcoming 2025 Endurance Program and our first step into commercialization. Thank you to our incredible team, partners, and supporters who have helped us reach new heights.

We’re very excited to share that we just completed a full diurnal flight in the stratosphere while staying over our area of operation. This was the most critical milestone towards long-duration flights. We launched at 7:36 AM MST on August 15th from the company’s New Mexico facility and landed at 12:21 PM MST, the following day, after the flight test points were completed.

This flight is a major step towards long-duration flights and furthered all key stratospheric objectives of the Sceye 2024 test program, including demonstrating diurnal flight, controlled relocation, and the ability to stay over an area of operation. The flight carried an advanced payload suite including synthetic aperture radar, stereo-optical cameras and infrared cameras to among others allow for detection of wildfires and methane leaks in real time, representing two significant sources of global warming.

Following a highly successful Ascent Dynamics stratospheric flight test program in 2023, Sceye kicked off its 2024 stratospheric flight season last Monday. This was the first flight of our Control Dynamics program, which has the overall objective of demonstrating controlled relocation, station-keeping capability, and diurnal flight. The June 3rd flight aimed to test system performance throughout day-to-night temperature and pressure variations. Data from sunrise to sunset and from solar noon to the depth of night was collected. In addition, Sceye executed the flight test using its beyond-line-of-sight command and communication link, marking another important milestone for operating HAPS anywhere. A huge thank you to the whole Sceye team for their hard work!

Last Friday, Sceye launched our fourth and final flight of the year, completing a remarkably successful 2023 flight program with several key objectives: Reliable launch and ascent, automation of pressure control, demonstration of attitude control and pitch stability, and more.
The platform carried several payloads from our partners at USGS and NOAA capable of advanced earth observation for a better understanding of our planet. We want to thank our amazing colleagues, partners, and friends for this flight season and we look forward to much more next year.

On Wednesday morning, Sceye successfully performed our third stratospheric flight test in three months, completing all primary objectives, including: Attitude and automated pressure control, beyond-line-of-sight command and reliable launch and ascent. Furthermore, Sceye successfully evaluated three independent and redundant communication data links for our High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS). All tests were performed at target altitude in the stratosphere. Multiple payloads were also flown; these consisted of an infrasonic sensor, a portable optical particle spectrometer (POPS), a radiosonde, and a prototype aerosol study device.

For the second time in 8 weeks, Sceye reached the stratosphere and demonstrated a stable transition to a level pitch attitude. The primary purpose of the flight test was to evaluate a novel launch method that could increase reliability during the initial ascent phase of flight and simplify the overall launch procedure. The platform also carried our first high-resolution camera, which was developed in-house for ground mapping with partners like the USGS and NASA.
