Why the Design Process Matters (and Why Timelines Should Be Respected)

As architects, we pour time, thought, and expertise into every stage of a project. Recently, we were reminded of the importance of making the process clear to everyone involved.

Here are a few points worth sharing:

1. Design is a process, not an overnight product.
Each phase (schematic design, design development, construction drawings) exists for a reason. At every stage, the design improves, details are refined, and issues are resolved. Stopping midway doesn’t mean the design is “final or wrong”—it’s simply still in progress or just notdone yet.

2. Timelines are crucial.
Rushed projects often lead to misunderstandings. A proper timeline ensures space for revisions, coordination with engineers, and alignment with the client’s vision. Skipping steps or pushing too fast compromises the outcome.

3. Professional respect matters.
Open communication and transparency allow everyone—clients, architects, contractors—to work together more effectively. It acknowledges the effort invested and creates trust throughout the process.

In short: Architecture is collaboration. It thrives when there’s trust, open communication, and respect for the process.

Small Area, Smart Layout: Toilet & Bath Design Tips

Having a small toilet & bath can be challenging, especially when arranging fixtures efficiently. A simple and practical layout is a linear placement:

✔️Wash Basin – Nearest to the door for accessibility
✔️ Water Closet – Centrally placed for ease of use
✔️ Shower Area – At the end to keep the rest of the space dry

This setup ensures a seamless flow, maximizes space, and maintains functionality.

Bonus Tip: Use a glass partition or shower curtain to prevent water from splashing everywhere!

Renovating a Rowhouse? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Renovating a house in a rowhouse subdivision in the Philippines can be exciting, but it comes with unique challenges! Here are key things to consider before you start your project:

1. Space Constraints
- Rowhouses often have narrow lot sizes, so every inch counts! Maximizing functionality is essential.

2. Structural Limitations
- Shared walls and existing foundations may limit major changes, like adding floors or reconfiguring layouts.

3. HOA Rules & Permits
- Subdivision guidelines may restrict exterior changes to maintain uniformity. Always check with your Homeowners’ Association (HOA) for approvals.

But sometimes, some allow you to design the exterior beyond the subdivision’s theme—well, good for you!

4. Ventilation & Lighting
- With limited windows, achieving good airflow and natural lighting can be tricky but essential for comfort.

5. Utility Upgrades
- Rerouting plumbing or electrical systems can be challenging due to shared infrastructure. Plan carefully!

6. Privacy Concerns
- Proximity to neighbors might require soundproofing or creative screening solutions for a more private space.

7. Cost Management
- Be prepared for unforeseen expenses, like addressing hidden structural issues or upgrading old systems.

8. Aesthetic Integration
- Keep the exterior in line with the subdivision’s style while giving your home a unique touch—if allowed!

9. Construction Logistics
- Narrow roads and limited staging areas for materials can slow down construction. Ensure your contractor has a plan for this!

10. Environmental Considerations
- In flood-prone areas, consider elevation adjustments and drainage solutions to protect your home.

Tip: Working with an experienced architect ensures your renovation is well-planned, compliant with regulations, and enhances your home’s value.
