The Chinese Space Program grew out of China's desire to obtain a ballistic missile program on par with the US and USSR during the cold war. It launched its first satellite in April 1970. Under CNSA (China National Space Administration) China has steadily improved its launch capabilities. In 2018 China exceeded the US launches with 38 to the US 34. But China's space program goes well beyond just being a leader in rocket launches. [ 749 more words ]

The Colorado-based SNC announced the name of its first Dream Chaser resupply ship, Tenacity, on August 12th. It will begin delivering supplies to the ISS in 2021. But this is just the beginning of what this company has planned. Dream Chaser Dream Chaser is a small, winged spacecraft resembling a mini space shuttle. Under NASA's CRS-2 (Commercial Resupply Services-2) contract, it will join a small fleet of commercial vessels fulfilling this role alongside SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Northup Grumman's Cygugus resupply craft. Who owns the Moon? The short answer is no one owns the Moon or for that matter anything else in space. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 states explicitly, ''outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means''. With the cold war raging, a key concern was keeping space free of nuclear weapons and becoming militarized. [ 776 more words ]

In January of 2020, NASA selected Axiom Space to build a new module for the ISS under the NextSTEP-2 (Space Technologies for Exploration Partnership) program. The program is a public-private partnership with NASA and commercial companies to develop space flight and exploration capabilities in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and beyond. Commercial expansion of the ISS BEAM (Bigelow Expansion Activity Module) was the first commercial module attached to the ISS in 2016 and built by… [ 676 more words ]

Congress has mandated NASA to use an SLS (Space Launch System) rocket for it's Europa Clipper mission. However, NASA estimates it could save $1.5 billion by using a commercial rocket. Using one of these rockets would be a substantial saving, and there are several commercial rockets available now. Whereas the earliest an SLS would not be available until 2025 at the earliest.
