We've seen everything from stumps with gigantic root balls, to stumps embedded in rock, and it seems rarely there an easy tree stump to remove and dispose of. The stumps that are the most fun are the ones that fit into the dump truck, and for reasons only known to god, decide to hang up on the tailgate when we are dumping them. That's the category the stump in this post belongs to. It's just the right size and should fit if we cut it down, but we have been fooled by that logic before. So, that's why we just haul them on them on the trailer, our experience has taught us to avoid the potential problem.

In Monday's post we showed what happens when a water leak goes unchecked; you end up with a swamp. Today you can see part of the process of us beginning to fix that leak. Since we are in Indiana, in the middle of winter, there was little hope of the water dissipating on its own. We gave it a day, but it simply wasn't going anywhere. So, as with most winter water leaks, we began the process of creating a pit, setting up the pump infrastructure... and freezing our cold, wet, butts off. Did we mention that fixing water leaks is rarely a fun job.

Water leaks are no fun for anybody involved. They typically represent a worse case scenario for contractors; the client needs it fixed ASAP, the ground is usually a muddy pit, and happens at the worst possible time. In this photo you can see that we have no chance of getting in here to fix it until things dry out a little. So we will drain it and hopefully in a day or two we can get in to do some work on it.

We realize that we just posted about how winter time is a great time to work on gravel projects. We understand that maybe we should show a little more variety rather than posting about gravel several days in a row. The thing is, its one of the only types of construction you can do in this area when everything else is drenched. The extra moisture actually benefits the gravel and helps it to pack in really well. On top of that, because we don't have to use a water truck like we do in the summer, the jobs can be done a little more cost effectively. So, like we said in our last post, if you have a road or parking area that you have been putting off graveling, now is a great time to take advantage of the winter schedule.

If you need, or know someone who needs, new gravel make sure to contact us for a quote.

As we have posted about previously, winter time is a great time to put down new gravel. The extra moisture helps in keeping dust to a minimum, and allows the gravel to pack in really well. We have posted previously about Storm Water Protection Plans, but there are a lot of pieces involved that typically go unnoticed. These plans are required by most municipalities to prevent construction debris from washing into existing storm water infrastructure. In this post you can see one of the many elements that go into making these plans effective. This inlet protector sits inside the collection basin and allows us to catch and dispose of any debris that make it to the inlet. As a last line of defense this does a good job of preventing debris from getting stuck in the critical infrastructure.

Depending on how much material we have to move, and how close the area we are working on is to subgrade, determines what equipment we use for that portion of the job. Sometimes we can get away with doing a lot of the work with a skid steer and roller, other times it takes a larger machine to work efficiently. That is the case in the photo, we had quite a bit of material to push across the site so we brought in a dozer to knock it out quickly.

Each site we visit is unique and requires selection of the appropriate equipment matched to the task at hand. There are many cases where large equipment doesn't make any sense due to a variety of reasons. Especially in cases like you see here, where we are trying to minimize the disturbance of the area where we are working. In this instance we are able to accomplish the trenching and conduit installation with a small trencher. This machine cuts and deposits material in a very narrow path leaving the surrounding ground undisturbed.

Dealing with excess material around the Indianapolis area can be a challenge sometimes. Depending on where you are in town there are a limited number of places who will take the "spoils." This is a part of the project that many people fail to take into account when they are creating a budget. Depending on the quantity and the distance from a pit who can dispose of the material, there can be a significant amount of expense associate with the removal.

The method of installation is a critical part to any drainage project. Time and time again we are called out to fix some component of a drainage system that has failed because the previous contractor has cut corners. In this image you can see that we have replaced a pipe that was improperly grouted and was allowing water to flow back through the pe*******on. With the new fix in place the system should work for years to come.

Using fill material with organic matter, such as grass clumps or dead trees, in construction projects can result in serious consequences. The organic material in the fill is prone to decomposition, which creates voids in the underlying soil. These voids can cause settling, cracking, and even collapse in the surrounding construction. To avoid these problems, we use only clean, inorganic fill materials in construction projects. These materials are stable, reliable, and unlikely to cause structural damage, ensuring the safety and longevity of the construction.

Understanding what materials will work for the varying conditions of each project is a critical part of being successful in this business. In this photo you can see that a previous contractor put down pea gravel as a base for this lot. That sounds like it will work until you consider that the lot caters to forklift traffic. When a forklift has several tons loaded, its little wheels don't work very well in pea gravel. Needless to say after replacing all the pea gravel with compacted gravel they had a much easier time traversing their lot.
