As governments, industry leaders and international organisations prepare to gather in Paris on 10 March for the 2nd Nuclear Energy Summit, World Nuclear Association reflects on the growing coalition behind the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy.

Building on the leadership of our Net Zero Nuclear initiative, this effort calls for unprecedented collaboration between governments and industry to at least triple global nuclear capacity by 2050.

With more countries signalling interest in joining the declaration, the Paris Summit marks a pivotal moment to demonstrate global ambition and accelerate action.

Episode 1 of Critical Mass podcast is now live – and its a solutions-focused conversation about nuclear energy’s role in achieving net zero.

In this inaugural episode, Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of World Nuclear Association, joins Gaurav Sharma to unpack one of the most consequential energy commitments of recent years: the declaration by 33 countries to triple global nuclear capacity.

Key themes explored in the episode include:
▪ What “tripling nuclear capacity” truly implies in practical, financial, and regulatory terms
▪ How to ensure the momentum behind nuclear energy today is focused towards delivery
▪ How public sentiment is evolving in the context of climate urgency and energy security
▪ The policy alignment and capital mobilisation required to translate ambition into deployment

For those working in energy, finance, policy, or heavy industry, this episode is essential listening. The net zero transition needs reliable, scalable, low-carbon technologies to provide the baseload.

📘 New report: World Nuclear Outlook

Today, the World Nuclear Association has released the World Nuclear Outlook Report, providing a comprehensive assessment of global nuclear ambitions — and the findings are significant.

Our analysis shows that government ambition for nuclear energy now exceeds the global pledge to triple nuclear capacity by 2050, endorsed by 33 countries. If current national targets are delivered, global nuclear capacity could reach around 1,446 GWe by 2050, surpassing the tripling goal.

Speaking from the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León emphasised that ambition must now translate into action — across policy, supply chains, skills development, financing, and project delivery.

The report highlights:
• Strong global momentum, with more than 50 countries advancing nuclear plans
• The critical role of lifetime extensions, new build, and timely delivery
• The urgency of moving from pledges to implementation

Delivering on the tripling pledge is essential for achieving net zero, strengthening energy security, and ensuring affordable, reliable clean energy at scale.

📌 What COP30 means for the nuclear supply chain in ASEAN

COP30 has set the stage for a major shift in how Southeast Asia approaches energy security and decarbonisation. For the nuclear supply chain, the signals are clearer than ever:

Nuclear enters ASEAN climate pledges.
- Two-thirds of NDCs due ahead of COP30 are now submitted, with countries like Singapore and Thailand formally recognising nuclear energy in their climate strategies.
Energy demand is soaring.
- ASEAN saw a 15.2% surge in energy use in 2022. Dependence on coal and imported gas is becoming untenable—nuclear offers a stable, low-carbon backbone alongside renewables.
- Collaboration will determine success.
Workforce development, regulatory readiness, technology transfer and supply-chain capacity must advance together to meet the region’s ambitions.
Manila 2026 will be a turning point.
The World Nuclear Supply Chain 2026 event is set to be a defining platform for turning nuclear from an NDC commitment into delivered projects.

As the world turns its focus toward COP31 in Antalya, the message is clear: this is the moment to show not just intent, but evidence.

Türkiye is already demonstrating what that looks like. By the time we convene next year, the first unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant will be preparing to power roughly 10% of the country’s electricity demand—a major step in its long-term decarbonization strategy and a strong signal of what emerging nuclear nations can achieve.

Over the next year, we’ll be working to:
🔹 Grow the coalition of countries, financial institutions, large energy users and industry who support the goal to at least triple nuclear capacity by 2050
🔹 Support countries considering nuclear in their NDCs, and
🔹 Help industry partners turn commitments into deployment—so COP31 features even more nuclear success stories.

Most importantly, we’ll keep strengthening collaboration across governments, financiers, major energy users, and the global nuclear industry.

Antalya, we’re coming—with purpose and with urgency.
