Register now for this years forum !

Registration open for SEVEN more days to join us at the Clean energy for EU islands forum 2024 in Pantelleria, Italy, on 14-15 May. This year's theme "The power of islands: building resilience through renewables" highlights the transformative potential of clean energy.

30 islands have been selected for support in achieving a fully renewable energy supply. The forum will bring together island representatives and EU stakeholders to discuss technical assistance initiatives and crosscutting issues.

Highlights include insights from legal studies on clean energy policies, networking opportunities, and Pantelleria's innovative approaches to energy transition.

While primarily in Pantelleria, selected sessions will be live-streamed for broader participation. Register with the EU islands secretariat for full access.

On Thursday 30th November, INSULAE consortium presented the final results of the project, in a 3.5h-session during the last day of Enlit Europe Conference and Exhibition in Paris.

The event was open to the public while online attendance was also available via webex. In the same context, during the 3 days of Enlit the consortium held a booth in the EU projects area, where the partners had the chance to promote the project to the visitors of the exhibition.

The final event started with some introductory questions about the audience role in order to engage with them and acquire some information regarding their views about decarbonization and challenges in island energy systems.
Then, the coordinator Leon Nielsen ( - Centro Tecnológico ) provided an overview of the project and the agenda of the event.

In the first panel, the lighthouse partners (Fakultet strojarstva i brodogradnje EEM - Electricidade da Madeira, S.A., Tekniske Universitet - DTU , Ericsson Nikola Tesla) under the broad topics of Battery storage and renewables, Electrification of Transport, and Integrated systems presented the results from the 7 use cases (UC) in the three islands, Unije, Bornholm and Madeira.

☑UC 1 - Joint management of hybridized RES and storage (Unije)
☑UC2 - Smart integration and control of water and energy systems (Unije)
☑UC3 – Empowerment of islands’ energy communities through 5G and IoT (Unije)
☑UC4 – Transition to DC Microgrids (Bornholm)
☑UC 5 -Realization of a bio-based economy (Bornholm)
☑UC6 - Electrification of Transport (Madeira)
☑UC7 – Stabilization of the grid through improvised assets and interconnections (Madeira)

The second panel, started with a short slido session to introduce the key elements considered for efficient planning and replication of decarbonisation solutions. Then, the development of the Investment Planning Tool (IPT) within INSULAE, including the replication activities in follower islands (Menorca, Marie Galante, Norderney, Psara) and its introduction to more islands were presented by Artelys and Εθνικό Κέντρο Έρευνας και Τεχνολογικής Ανάπτυξης (CERTH).

Following the visits to and lighthouses, INSULAE partners met from 31st May to 2nd June 2023 in Mali Lošinj the most populated settlement of the Kvarner archipelago, 15 miles southeast of Unije, the Croatian INSULAE lighthouse.

The partners held their last general assembly before the end of the project and also had the chance to travel to , and visit the desalination unit which has an installed capacity of 7 kW of rooftop solar panels and a battery system of 10kWh.

Additionally local stakeholders such as the Mayor of Mali Lošinj and representatives from HEP, the national utility company and Cres – Lošinj Island Development Agency and energy cooperative, Apsyrtides joined the meetings and presented their island decarbonization plans.

The INSULAE project coordinator Leon Nielsen (Fundación Circe) and the other partners want to thank our Croatian lighthouse partners (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, VIOCL, Institution Regional Energy Agency Kvarner, Ericsson Nikola Tesla and WWF AdriaWWF Adria) for hosting and supporting the organization of these project meetings and visits.
