“THIS HEAT IS KIILIN ME!!!” This is the average phrase I hear a lot this time of year when the temperature is as hot as they've been outside. Even though it's a phrase used for our summer heat, we find that it is killing many air conditioning systems... literally!

We find blown fuses, blown run capacitors, bad control boards, burnt wiring at electrical connections, seized fan motors, etc...

Many of these issues could have been prevented by having the air conditioning checked and/or cleaned instead of your house heating up to 90+ degrees making you miserable waiting for an hvac company to come out and get you cool again.

Bad HVAC Signs to look for:
If your house is not cooling towards the end of the day like it usually does, system is louder than normal when running and/or starting, your energy bills are higher than normal, or the system has not been checked in quite some time...

Whats a CAPACITOR!!!

My AC Technician recommend replacing the capacitor(s)?
...Are they important?
...Is the technician being honest?

Everyone loves the classic "Flux Capacitor" phrase on one of the greatest movies 'Back to the Future'. When it comes to your air conditioner, you definetaly don't need a "Flux Capacitor"..But, Capacitors are an important part to keeping your system running properly and at it's optimum efficiency. Capacitors SHOULD be checked periodically to prevent motor(s) failure and/or even complete system failure.

One of the main reasons of capacitors failing is due to our HOT Summer Temperatures. Capacitors generate more heat and result in failure. Other causes can be dirty coils, motor(s) failing, and low refrigerant.

Simply put, Capacitor(s) store and send a jolt of energy to start and/or keep your compressor, blower motor, and condenser fan motor running.

If you feel your Technician is recommending a capacitor when the system seems to be cooling just fine, ask him to show you the readings. More than likely, he's right and trying to help prevent future issues to your system and wallet. An honest technician will always be happy to educate you on your HVAC system.

*If your energy bills seem higher than normal, system is louder than normal, or not quite getting to that desired temperature by the end of the day...
