Vietnam Considers Purchasing Dassault Rafale
After decades of using Sukhoi aircraft, the Vietnamese Air Force is advancing in talks with Dassault to incorporate the Rafale, bolstering its attack and surveillance capabilities.
Recent reports from European media indicate that negotiations between Hanoi and Paris have progressed to a critical point, including direct technical evaluations by Vietnamese military personnel.
According to Air Data News, the interest in the Rafale arises in the context of the obsolescence of the current Vietnamese Air Force (VPAF) fleet, composed mainly of Soviet and Russian-made aircraft for which the country has had difficulty obtaining spare parts.
The Rafale offers advanced electronic warfare and precision strike capabilities, key elements for deterrence in disputed maritime zones. Furthermore, this potential acquisition would place Vietnam on technological parity with other regional operators, such as Indonesia, which has already finalized the purchase of 42 units of the same model.
Hanoi has already taken the first steps toward standardization with Western equipment following the recent delivery of Beechcraft T-6C Texan II turboprop trainers, transferred by the United States.
Although discussions are at an advanced stage—including test flights conducted by Vietnamese pilots—integrating a French platform presents a logistical challenge for an air force built under the doctrine of the Eastern Bloc. Vietnam will need to invest in new logistics centers and technical training programs to maintain the fighters' operational readiness in the long term.
