Sowing for 2025 is almost done!

It takes a whole lot of planning and coordinating to organise multiple machines across multiple paddocks, and it takes a skilled crew to make it all come together.

There's been a lot of late nights and early mornings. 🤪

This year, we were super fortunate to get to come back to capture this part of our farming cycle (he previously photographed Harvest 2023). He's done an amazing job again, and hopefully, we can have him back for harvest again this year.
Seriously, if you want great pics to record the history of your farming business... he's your man!

It's hard to imagine that in the coming weeks, these huge expanses will turn green and eventually gold before we harvest.

At times, the mallee is can seem a bit desolate but just add water, and we can be pretty productive and efficient with our water usage.
Drought is currently a terrible reality for many farmers across SE Australia at the moment. We have been lucky so far, but we are only too familiar with the disappointment of a fair-weather forecast or rain clouds that either never come or seem to go around your farm.

For those who are struggling - we see you! 💚

So please, tell us, how are things looking where you are? Do you have any rain on your forecast?

We need to eat.

Our nutritional requirements dictate that we need to eat frequently, most of us eat multiple meals daily.

Often though, the food that we eat is only produced once a year. Many harvests are an annual occurrence. This doesn’t mean that farms are only busy once a year but rather, they are working on seasonal cycles to strategically plan, prepare, plant and sustain optimal growth of our produce.

Many farms around the Mallee region may look bare right now but there is lots happening behind the scenes, to reduce soil moisture loss from w**d pressure, machinery servicing and maintenance, and ensuring that we are prepared with enough seed, fertiliser and in-crop w**d control measures prior to commencing sowing.

If you eat any grains or pulses today, take a moment to think about the years worth of work that gone into your mouth. Bon appetite! 🥪

You are not your farm! - Wise words from .farmlifepsych

Mother Nature can feel cruel sometimes.

A decent rain instead of a frost, could have made all the difference for some this season.

The recent frost event has taken yields from hero to zero.
All of the work and inputs to maximise a good year could have really paid off, but not this time.

It’s no one’s fault, it’s the risk vs reward.

What can we do?

It’s normal to feel angry or dejected, but the scenario isn’t personal and there’s a lot of others in the same situation.

Remember that you’re not alone and taking action can help. Whether that action is seeking out the support of a professional, spending some time with friends/ family, or making a decision to pivot in your business, action can move you from where you are.

I can’t tell you what is the right move for you but I can tell you that the situation is no reflection of you, and that you’re not alone.

Life isn’t always about making hay while the sun shines, sometimes it’s about making hay because your crop got frosted!

My wonderful mother in law and one of her besties are trekking this challenge.
To honour the memory of our beloved Gordon Murdoch, who passed away from GI cancer last year, we would deeply appreciate any contribution made to the Gutsy Challenge.
Geraldine and Robyn are prepared to go the hard yards for this cause, so we invite you to support them and remember the wonderful man that Gordon was. 💜

We are undertaking the Grampians Gutsy Challenge and trekking for four days to raise awareness and vital funds for Gastro-Intestinal (GI) cancer research - a cause that is close to our hearts. Over 36,000 Australians are diagnosed with a GI cancer each year. Clinical trials research is essentia...
