The project aims to evaluate the effects of cognitive stimulation in elderly people with cognitive impairment or mild dementia, with or without previous chronic mental disease, in a collaborative effort of researchers and public/private nonprofit institutions in Portugal. Neuropsychological assessment and adaptation of a cognitive training program for elderly people (diagnosed with dementia, schi
zophrenia, bipolar disorder and intellectual disability); review of cognitive performance in different psychogeriatric subgroups; characterization of the socio-economic and clinical situation of patients and informal caregivers; psychoeducational programs for caregivers. The assessment of cognitive dimensions of patients with different diagnoses, are needed to establish evidence-based recommendations. Increase of the knowledge about the needs, effectiveness and quality of community interventions, compared to institutional interventions, among older people with different mental disorders and their caregivers, are mandatory. Promotion of mental health in the community and adapted responses, within the framework of intervention programs, in articulation with partner entities. The project unfolds the elaboration of guidelines and recommendations for rehabilitation and mental health interventions, to contribute for the Mental Health National Program (National Health Plan).
