GeoJoes Rocks! is planning a day for the rocks. The idea is to get together and show and tell, to talk about our rocks. We can identify and classify them, tell each other why they are special to us, discuss the geology, talk about starting a proper systematic collection out of our unorganized bags and boxes of rocks. We can trade or sell our extras. Whatever we want. I'm thinking a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in the next month or two, let's say by the end of April or early May if not sooner. If you are interested text or email me and I'll come up with a place and we'll set a date. Contact me at [email protected] or text me at 805-740-0389.

Rockers! Hey who doesn't love plagioclase feldspars? Aw, you might not know it but feldspars are one of the most common group of minerals on the Earth's surface. They're found in volcanic rocks and granitic rocks as well as many metamorphic rocks. There are two basic types of feldspars: the alkalai or K-spars and the plagioclase feldspars. Today we are just going to look at the plagioclase group. There are several gemstone varieties within the plagioclase group. They are sunstone, a variety of plagioclase called oligoclase. Then we have andesine and finally labradorite. All three have a shimmering or even irridescence but labradorite puts out so much color it has its own name - labradorescence. Take a look at the pics below. The labradorite pics come from my stash and are available to you at great prices. They are big chunky pieces most are 1 1/2" to 2" and at least a half inch thick and prices range from $5 to $12 each. The colors on these are amazing. Text or call 805-740-0389 GeoJoes Rocks!

I'm looking for people who want to get educated about local geology by doing 3 or 4 hour walks at different locations. Each location will be a different topic. I need to get 15 to 20 people per event to make it work. It will be informal but engaging. I will distribute handouts and such other materials as i deem necessary. Topics will be announced but preliminary ideas are:
Geology of the Santa Cruz Mountains
Starting a Rock Collection
The San Andreas Fault
Geologic Hazards of Santa Cruz Fossils of Santa Cruz
Looking at Sand
Volcanoes of Local Interest

Cost will be $20 or $25 per head. Let me know if you are interested text me YesGeologyWalk at 805-740-0389. Tell your friends. GeoJoes Rocks!

To make pieces like the jasper and cherts shown I used a combination of diamond hones, diamond files and sandpaper. I first select a stone with a shape that inspires me to make something from it. In other words if the stone is solid and won't break as i work it i let the shape inspire me. Of course i could make a round shape out of a square piece but why not save time and make a triangular piece out of a piece that is already that shape. I have lots of stones in many shapes so tell me ehat you want and i can show those shapes to you or lets get together and you can look through the many specimens i have until you find something that inspires you. So for the equipment you will want to use:
Diamond embedded hones come in 3 grits. Coarse, medium and fine. They are $8 each. Diamond embedded files come in many shapes but i recommend at least a flat, round, half round and a tapered flat. They are $2 each. Sandpaper can be purchased in packs through me or you can get it from your local hardware store or paint section at auto parts stores or boat shops or Home Depot. I sell packs of 10 sheets for $6 and they are available in a pack of mixed grits with coarse (60 or 80), medium (180 to 240), fine (400 to 600) and very fine (1000 to 1200). Or in packs of 10 sheets of each individual grit, for example 10 sheets of 60 or 10 sheets of 180 and so on. Don't forget to do your work with water to keep dust down or wear a good dust mask. Water makes the tools last longer, too.
So, get busy already... Buy some rocks or collect your own but get your hones and files now, i don't know how long I'll have them available... Contact me by text at 831-466-6017.

Beautiful Jasper For Sale

This jasper was found in an ancient stream bed deposit and was basically this shape. I spent about 2 hours shaping it so it is symmetric and has a smooth rounded surface (it was lumpy before). The back side is shown and IF the buyer wanted to smooth it like the front side it would probably take 2-4 hours to do so depending on how aggressive you are with the grinding and sanding. I have the front side sanded to 400 grit so it needs some more work to get it to really shine. So to show it really shiny some of the pics are of the piece wet which is about how it would look fully polished. Its up to the buyer to decide what they want to do with it. The rock is from a deposit in the Purisima Formation so it was deposited in the stream about 3-4 million years ago. How long it was bouncing around before that is anyones guess. If you are interested im asking $20 obo for it. Contact me by text at 831-466-6017. Thanks!
