CONTACT AREA AT PARTING LINE
Another item that requires attention is the contact area of the spacer block. The stress on these areas should be such as to prevent the embedding of these blocks into the plates, thus causing a change of the space for the ejection system. The safe tonnage that a mold base will take as far as spacer blocks are concerned can be calculated in this way. Let us take a 9(7/8") X 11(7/8") standard mold base made of low carbon steel. The weakest section of the spacer bar is at the clamping slot area. For this size mold base, the width of the block is 1(7/16") and the width of the clamping slot is 5/8". The area will be 1(7/16") minus 5/8", or 13/16", X 11(7/8") X 2, since there are two blocks.

Area X allowable stress = Compressive Force

The allowable stress for low carbon steel is 25,000 psi. Thus:

13/16" X 11(7/8") X 2 X 25,000 psi = 4,82,000 lb or 241 tons

Higher-strength steel throughout the base can double or even triple the ability to absorb the compressive force. The addition of supporting pillars will also increase the compressive force in proporation to the area that they provide. Thus, two 2-in. diameter pillars would add the following force:

Area of a 2-in. -diam. pillar = 3.14 in.(power 2) X 2 = 6.28 in.
(power 2)
6.28 X 25,000 = 1,57,000 lb or 78.5 tons

The embedding problem does arise, especially when changes are made in supporting bar dimensions or supporting blocks.
