How is heat generated during machining? And why does it matter? 🔧
During chip machining, very high temperatures are generated at the cutting point, which have a significant impact on the entire production process.
Using a thermal imaging camera, you can observe the temperature distribution during machining with your students and show them what happens between the tool, the chip, and the workpiece.
This measurement helps students better understand:
• how and where heat is generated during machining,
• how high temperatures affect tool wear and life,
• why it is important to choose the right cutting conditions (speed, feed, depth of cut),
• what role cooling and lubrication play,
• how temperature affects the quality of the machined surface.
By combining theory with practical measurement, students gain a realistic understanding of the processes that normally take place "hidden" from the machine operator's view.
Modern technology thus helps them to better understand machining and prepare for practical work in industry.
Teaching technology can be illustrative, modern, and meaningful!
