Low-cost Dutch airline Transavia has opened an investigation after one of its pilots was locked out of the cockpit mid-flight after his co-pilot fell asleep.

A report on the incident, which occurred on a Boeing 737 flight to Crete in September, has been released by the Dutch aviation safety board (OVV) as part of its quarterly report.

“After two and a half hours in the air the captain of the Dutch-registered plane left the cockpit to go to the toilet,” the OVV said.

“A little later he wanted to return to the cockpit. When he used the intercom to call the first officer to open the door he got no reaction.

“When he managed to get into the cockpit, he found the first officer asleep.” The OVV added that Transavia was investigating the incident.

A cargo plane attempting to take off from Ghana's capital has crashed, slamming into cars and a bus loaded with passengers on a nearby street, killing at least 10 people, officials said.
The crash happened in Accra near the Kotoka International Airport, which sits near newly built high-rise buildings, hotels and the country's Defence Ministry. Witnesses said the plane first smashed through the fence that runs around the airport before hitting the bus.

Heathrow hits 70m passengers for the first time

8.6m passengers travelled through BAA’s airports in March, a rise of 4.0% on the previous year. This increase was helped by Easter being earlier this year, with a substantial proportion of pre-Easter traffic falling in March rather than in April last year.

Heathrow saw 5.7m passengers pass through its terminals, a rise of 6.9% on March 2011. That increase means Heathrow saw more than 70m passengers over a twelve month period for the first time. It passed the 60m mark in 1998.

PROPOSED LONDON THAMES HUB AIRPORT IN ‘VERY WORST SPOT’ SAY AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS

A proposed airport in the Thames estuary would be in the “very worst spot” for the south-east’s crowded airspace, according to the boss of Britain’s air traffic control service, Nats. Richard Deakin, chief executive of Nats, said the architects of the Thames Hub airport had not contacted them beforehand to discuss its feasibility. Norman Foster and partners unveiled the blueprints of the £50bn project last November.
