The start of a new project involving 3D scanning, compound surface extraction, and composite mould design.

I’ll be able to show parts of this project — but not all of it.

Step one was validating the scan data and surface extraction. A skin was created from the existing fairing geometry, then 3D printed and test-fitted over the original part.

This process confirms the accuracy of the scan data and validates that the mould design will correctly locate and clip over the existing fairing once manufactured.

Happy to say the fitment came out exactly as planned, so now it’s on to the next stage.

When it comes to hand bending tube, there are many different ways to approach the task.

Given that the technology is available and time on the tools is ever so valuable. Designing the system first and making the mistakes digitally is by far a better option!!

Here at voxel we have a system in place to export the bend sequence so that any tube with the correct parameters setup for tooling, can be bent by hand with great success!

These can also be sent to a CNC tube bender as well! But we know factors may inhibit that such as freight costs or machine Down-Time. Specially for large/long tubes up here in FNQ.

This design started as a chat and a general idea of what the requirements were. Then I got to work!

Hand drawing, brain storming, modeling up ideas 1 part at a time. The final result will bring new a fresh ideas to the marine industry.

Machined billet parts coupled with carbine fibre tube, bonding techniques and even some sheet metal! (Not pictured..)

What if you could do both? Measure measuring radii, cross referencing 30 year old drawings and sanity checks. Become a lot easier when accurate scan data is obtained.
