Vitamin A is an essential nutrient !
The letter asks Greenpeace to cease its efforts to block introduction of a genetically engineered strain of rice that supporters say could reduce Vitamin-A deficiencies causing blindness and death in children in the developing world.

It's the latest sign of a rift between the scientific establishment and anti-GMO activists.

We recently published data a specific group of drugs that act like retinoids (RARβ2 agonists) can reverse fatty liver disease and that RARβ2 (a retinoid receptor) is an attractive target for development
of NAFLD therapies.
Key messages of the paper include:
• Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are an important pharmacological target for the prevention of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD). • Retinoids and retinoic acid receptors (RARs) possess favorable metabolic modulating properties. • An agonist for retinoic acid receptor-β2 (RARβ2), but not RARγ, mitigates HSC activation and NAFLD.

This is a major advance in our understanding of medical problems associated with obesity.

Obesity impairs the body's ability to use vitamin A appropriately and leads to deficiencies of the vitamin in major organs.
