Drones won’t benefit everyone.

That’s the realization I had this week while mapping out service offerings for Signum Aerial. The reality is simple: not every business problem can be solved by a drone.

Take a small construction firm struggling with cash flow. Introducing drones into the mix can’t realistically fix that... or can it?

Here’s the mental back-and-forth I went through. To fix cash flow, you need more paying clients in the pipeline. To win more clients, you need to stand out. So, how do drones fit in?

By becoming your business’s "X-factor."

Instead of just telling a client, “the house is taking shape,” you show them. Weekly aerial progress photos, dynamic timelapses where they can watch the build come alive... it’s an immediate way to differentiate yourself from the competition.

If you’re running a small construction firm, I’m curious: is this a wild assumption, or is it an edge you'd want to trial?

Recently, I’ve committed to getting my drone license or RPC (Remote Pilot Certificate) as it’s most well-known. It has been an interesting process of studying, admin, and questioning myself if this business is even worth pursuing.

To (legally) fly a drone for commercial gain in South Africa, you have to jump through a lot of hoops. Some make sense to me and others don’t. This has forced me to question myself and my business idea a lot. “Will this thing take-off”? — pun intended…

Good things are often gated by having to answer difficult questions. Although I have no guarantee on the success of this business or idea, I do know that it’s definitely worth a go!

Theory exams are done — the next focus is passing my Restricted Radio Exams.

A few months ago, I spoke with a project manager who had just come out of a construction dispute.

Six months delayed. The contractor said otherwise. Nobody had a clear answer.

They didn't have progression footage.

This is the practical side of aerial documentation that most people don't talk about. When something goes wrong - and in construction, something usually does -weekly progression shots are the fastest way to show what happened, when, and who was responsible. Not an argument. Evidence.

But that's just one benefit.

Clients who can't visit site regularly sleep better when they can see progress every week. The team stays accountable. Questions reduce and trust grows.

From a safety angle? If your insurer ever needs proof that protocols were followed— you'll be glad the images exist.

And the marketing? You're building things people never get to watch take shape. A structure rising from the ground. A dam being formed. Those stories sell future projects.

I talk regularly with contractors across the Free State. Some built this into their standard process years ago.

The rest are catching up.

Dis waar voorskrif kaarte inkom…

Eenvoudig.

Net 'n speelding.

Vinniger, slimmer, en veiliger as ooit.
