This season we head out expecting what I assume to be “normal” sardine run encounter

Common dolphins usually build and hold bait balls. Bottlenose dolphins usually don’t. They hunt differently, scattering fish as they chase individuals.

But every now and then the ocean decides to rewrite the script.

This bottlenose pod not only created a bait ball, they held it in place long enough for us to witness something I’ve only rarely heard about - a bottlenose baitball. A reminder that no matter how much time you spend on the water, nature always has another surprise waiting.

That’s the gift of the ocean. Just when you think you’ve seen it all… it shows you something new

The Sardine Run isn’t just about sardines.

Long before you find the bait balls, the ocean is already putting on a show. Dolphins launch into the air for no apparent reason, humpback whales crash back to earth with enough force to shake the sea, gannets fold their wings and become guided missiles, and curious sharks patrol beneath it all.

These are the opening acts. The appetiser.

Because when all of these predators suddenly start gathering in one place, you know something extraordinary is about to happen.

And that’s when the real show begins.

Powerful, curious and far more placid than most people imagine. Having blacktips swarm around you, yet treat you like a piece of furniture is a novel experience not for the feint hearted.

Even after years of diving with these animals moments like these never lose their magic. These misunderstood and villainised creatures are a reminder that we are taught fear.

They belong here and deserve our protection.

Protea Banks has been on my bucket list for years, rumours of a deep reef that stretches beyond the horizon, holes filled with sharks and currents that change your hairstyle were fables that I had to come and see for myself.

I was not disappointed! Dropping into the screaming current we were greeted by circling bull sharks, eagle rays and even some humpback whales on one occasion. Reaching the bottom without taking at least 10 pics was quite challenging.

And oh man - hitting the bottom was something other worldly. The sandstone reef has been carved over eons. Trenches lead off to an abyss on one side with gulley that end in incredible cave structures, this is where the magic happens. Ragged tooth sharks congregate here escaping the current and taking time to rest and digest. While they may look vicious Raggies are some of the tamest sharks, very seldom showing aggression, these slow moving beauties are a videographers dream - seeming to pose for the camera and performing slow fly byes.

Ending the dive isn’t really the end at all, the trip to the safely stop one one occasion a huge school of tunny passed underneath us and then the usual suspect showed up - the blacktips! These gals are extremely curious, harmless and almost tame - they circle you to the surface, sometimes giving you very little personal space, photographic heaven!
