Are your disinfectants protecting your herd from FMD?

Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease (FMD) persists in many Southern African regions, and simply spraying a surface isn’t enough. The Zambian Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) note that FMD virus can be deactivated by specific oxidising agents but is resistant to iodophores, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and phenol, especially when organic matter is present. In other words, many “everyday” QAC‑based farm disinfectants won’t neutralise FMD.

A joint FAO/WOAH field manual explains why: phenolics and QAC disinfectants are mainly antibacterial and have little or no activity against many viruses; they are not recommended when more effective virucidal agents are available.

This declaration calls on all spheres of government, communities and farmers to strengthen support and implement contingency measures to contain the outbreak and safeguard livelihoods.

Local Farmers’ Associations play a critical role in coordinating biosecurity measures, sharing best practices, establishing checkpoints and countering misinformation. Farmers are urged to restrict livestock movement, strengthen on-farm biosecurity and report suspected cases immediately.
