It's amazing to see celebrations like these in aerospace and aviation. I am happy not everyone is sitting and waiting for a bursary or a hand out. Keep pushing passionate aviators

THE APPROXIMATE COST OF BECOMING A PILOT.

Note I am not discouraging anyone ...I am just would like to inform the nation. Note quotations are free from ATO/schools....go find out and let us confirm if it is not a ploy to take your money.

Pilot Qualification is in 3 stages

(PPL) Pvt Pilot = R150k -> with this licence you can not work, it's a for private use only and you will only have 45-60 hours experience. Should take you about a 6 months max 1 year, to attain.

The next step is

(CPL) Commercial Pilot - This is just a skills qualification, it's about R350 - R500k (price depends on which ATO do you go to and which Aircraft do you train on. Eg a Piston twin/multi engine rating is about R2000 -R4000 per hour, and you need about 30 hrs or if you struggle a bit 40 hrs. A certified CPL holder will have spend about R400 - R600k today.

It should take you 1 year if you have the cash issue sorted and you don't struggle with flying and pass every theory exam by 75 % or more....no less

And there is ATPL (Frozen) which is basically classes costs and writing cost

Not forgetting this

Every Single thing cost a lot

Headsets = R3000-R5000
Maps = R1000 - depending on what level you on.
Study books = easily over R5000 - again depends what level you on.

Aviation is not a easy industry to fund.

People take it lightly

And think come on 75% pass for an exam it's easy. All I am saying if you didn't pass Math or Science or any subject well in school.

When you get to an ATO you become you won teacher and tutor and instructor.....there is no spoon feeding in Aviation.

It's a very technical skill which has academic and practical difficulties....

I remember over 10 years ago - SAA used to fund a cadet @ R650k for 18months - covered Flying, study materials, accommodation, etc

So please tell me

Who will fund or loan anyone for over R700k most probably the approximate total price for 18months period, from nothing to a CPL holder with frozen ATPL.

And it gets worse

After that 18 months if you do it like SA cadet programme used to be like.

You will hold that professional skill with only 250 hours

You do not have experience operationally

So you need to get to 500 hours total time with at least a Turbine engine rating.

That extra jump will cost close to 500k

Because if you go get a Caravan C208/ king airB200 rating = R80k -R150k

And hire and fly it at an hourly rate to get 50 -100 PIC hours

And then go hire a small single piston aircraft to build 100-150hrs at a fee per hour let's say R1000

It's tall order.

So we have to get the Gov in and private sectors to bring the 250 - 500 hours experience gaining journey down but by developing something call sustainable development programme for funded cadets.

Reduce operational costs by Gov and PVT sectors co-paying this can be achieved in many ways but there is a day for such discussions, Of which I have had with the office of DCA and some Ministers and Pvt companies.

Let's see how long will it take for this to work...it might work for our kids one day but not in the next 2 years
