IEEE Africon

IEEE Africon IEEE AFRICON is an IEEE Region 8 flagship conference held in Africa every two years. The conference will be organized by the IEEE South Africa Section.

The event will be hosted by the University of Limpopo at the Protea Hotel by Marriottยฎ Polokwane Ranch Resort from the 10th to the 12th of December 2025, under the theme โ€œReimagine the Future Through the Advancement of Information Technologyโ€. This conference will feature world-class plenary speakers, technical symposiums, industry and academic panels, workshops, tutorials, and invited tracks on e

merging technologies. IEEE AFRICON 2025 is co-sponsored by IEEE Region 8 and the IEEE South Africa Section and is the flagship conference for the African continent. This will be the 17th Edition of the biennial conference which was previously held in Nairobi, Kenya (1983), Abidjan, Ivory Coast (1987), Mbabane, Swaziland (1992), Stellenbosch, South Africa (1996), Cape Town, South Africa (1999), George, South Africa (2002), Gaborone, Botswana (2004), Windhoek, Namibia (2007), Nairobi, Kenya (2009), Livingston, Zambia (2011), Mauritius (2013), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2015), Cape Town, South Africa (2017), Accra, Ghana (2019) and Arusha, Tanzania (2021), Nairobi, Kenya (2023). Rama Afullo, Founder & CEO of Satlyt, delivered the Keynote Address at the IEEE AFRICON Conference, where he explored the theme โ€œBuilding the Cloud in Orbit: Africaโ€™s Role in the Future of Edge AI and Space Infrastructure.โ€

In his address, Afullo highlighted the transformative potential of space-based computing and emphasised how Africa can position itself at the forefront of this emerging frontier. He discussed the convergence of satellite systems, distributed cloud architectures, and edge AI, outlining a roadmap for how the continent can leverage these technologies to unlock new economic opportunities, strengthen digital sovereignty, and accelerate innovation across sectors.
