The Department of Energy had committed in 2009 to ensure that 1,000,000 Solar Water Heaters (SWH's) are installed in households and commercial buildings throughout South Africa, over a period of five years. The Minister of Energy, Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, ensured South Africa's commitment towards pursuing alternative energy solutions to help with the growing demand for energy in the country.

Solar Water Heaters not only improves quality of life and a reduction in electricity usage & costs for lower income groups, but it also reduces the amount of fossil fuels (such as parrafin) used for water heating.
