We are Proud to share the successful completion of the Plant 4 Waste Heat Boiler Repair, a critical path project within Astron Energy’s 2026 turnaround objective, delivered on time within an 8-week ex*****on window.
A Waste Heat Boiler is a large industrial heat exchanger that recovers thermal energy from high-temperature process gases in a refinery, making its reliability absolutely essential to safe and efficient plant operations. Any unplanned failure or delay in its repair directly impacts the entire refinery restart.
As Engineering Consultant on behalf of Astron Energy (Pty) Ltd., Megchem managed the full scope from a single point of accountability, coordinating 8 specialist subcontractors from first site engagement on 5 January 2026 through to construction completion on 15 April 2026.
The scale of delivery:
· 30,000+ manhours across engineering, fabrication, and construction
· Over 350 engineering documents and drawings managed across 5 technical disciplines
· Only 14 Technical Queries raised throughout ex*****on, a strong indicator of upfront engineering quality and clear communication
· Physical scope included the removal, fabrication, and installation of critical internal components: tubesheets (the end plates that hold hundreds of tubes in place), baffles (flow directors inside the vessel), and structural T-bars
What made this technically demanding was not just the physical complexity, but the engineering rigour required behind it. Key components were re-engineered using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a computer-based simulation method that models how structures respond to real-world stresses and loads, ensuring every replacement part was designed to perform safely under actual operating conditions, not just on paper.
Delivering 30,000 manhours of coordinated work across engineering, fabrication, and construction within a compressed turnaround schedule demands exceptional planning, technical alignment, and ex*****on discipline. That's exactly what this team demonstrated.
