LETS REALLY THINK ABOUT IT…

South Africa is producing a new wave of matriculants right now. Thousands of young people writing their final exams with the belief that a better future waits on the other side.

That belief collapses fast.

Universities and colleges do not have space for everyone. Many will go home next year with no plan, no opportunities, and no entry into the economy. They will immediately join the unemployment crisis that already defines our country. This is not a future problem. It is a present failure.

Private companies are cutting jobs. Government isn’t creating enough new ones. Young people with degrees are sitting at home. The labour market is closed for most, especially those without higher education. The result is predictable. Boredom becomes hopelessness. Hopelessness becomes depression. Depression becomes addiction, crime and su***de. We already see it in our communities.

African Kivuli Foundation rejects the idea that young people must wait for institutions to fix themselves. Waiting has a cost we can measure in human lives.

The path forward is skills. Real skills. Technical ability that creates income. Entrepreneurship that turns talent into economic activity. Productive engagement that keeps young people moving, thinking and building instead of breaking under pressure.

Youth unemployment is not a statistic. It is the sharpest threat to our future. The only defence is equipping young people to participate in the economy whether someone hires them or not.

African Kivuli Foundation was honoured to have our Co-Founder and Head of Strategy & Innovation, Njabulo Mashiya, attend the Solidarity Hub hosted by ACT Ubumbano.

The gathering brought together participants from 14 African countries, including Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa, to reflect on what solidarity means in practice and how it can strengthen our collective work in communities.

Njabulo shared insights on how solidarity must be grounded in the communities we serve, reminding us that communities understand their own challenges best and should be at the centre of shaping their solutions. He also emphasised the role of research and evidence in ensuring that our solidarity work responds to real needs, not assumptions.

A key discussion moment came when a participant asked:

“Do non-profits or civil society organisations know their exit date or exit strategy from communities?”

This question reminded all of us that civil society should not exist on the suffering of communities, but should work towards solving issues and empowering communities toward independence and dignity.

We thank ACT Ubumbano for creating a powerful platform for learning, exchange, and reflection.
