International girls in ICT spotlight goes to Laaiqah Seedat

Laaiqah is a distinguished graduate holding a BSc in computer science and information technology (Cum laude) from the University of Johannesburg.

She stands as a lifetime member of the esteemed Golden Key International Honour Society.

Throughout her university period, she excelled, ranking among the top 10 achievers in four modules.

Notably, she led a team representing UJ at the Dirisa Datathon, securing first place under her guidance. Further amplifying her leadership capabilities, she spearheaded another team, this time representing South Africa, at the prestigious Super Computing conference in the United States. Under her guidance, the team clinched an impressive second place, solidifying her reputation for excellence.

Happy International ICT Day!

This year’s theme for the Girls in ICT day celebrations is leadership to underscore the critical need for strong female role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

While there is a leadership gender gap in every industry, the largest gaps are found in the STEM fields. Women in ICT often find themselves in junior or support roles rather than in managerial roles, with little opportunity for advancement. They are also less likely to hold an executive position, become ICT entrepreneurs, or be represented among science and technology policymakers.

To thrive in STEM, girls and young women must be exposed to women in leadership positions, fostering inspiration and breaking down barriers that hinder their progress.

Let us continue to empowerment women and encourage leadership development for a more equitable future in STEM.
