Most fire safety plans were written before lithium-ion batteries were everywhere on business premises.

Today they're in the laptops on every desk, the power tools in the workshop, the e-bikes in the loading bay, and increasingly in the solar/inverter battery banks businesses installed to manage load-shedding.

When a lithium-ion cell fails, it goes into thermal runaway - a self-feeding reaction that generates its own heat and oxygen. It doesn't need an external flame to keep burning, and standard water, foam or CO2 extinguishers are often not rated to stop it.

Under the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993) and SANS 1475/1910, employers have a legal duty to provide firefighting equipment suited to the actual risks on their premises.

For most businesses today, that now includes lithium-ion risk.

Question worth asking this week: if a battery caught fire in your building right now, is the nearest extinguisher actually rated for it?
