Explainer Series | Episode 1: How Neutralization Works

In the first episode of our new explainer series, we take you inside our operations to explore the process principles, technical standards and management practices behind our work. We begin with the neutralization process that takes place before tailings are stored.

Even after cathode copper is produced, the process is not yet complete. During thickening, the copper-rich solution is separated from the remaining solids. The resulting underflow then enters the neutralization system for further treatment before being transferred to the tailings storage facility.

Milk of lime is added to the slurry to adjust its pH and is evenly dispersed through continuous agitation. Multiple pH checks are carried out at different stages, followed by a final verification before storage, to ensure that the slurry is properly neutralized and meets the required standards.

For Sino Metals, neutralization is more than a technical process. It is an important part of responsible tailings management and reflects our commitment to environmental protection and safety compliance throughout our operations.

πŸŽ₯ Watch to learn how neutralization works and why each step matters.

Today, we honour the hardworking farmers whose dedication feeds our families, strengthens our communities, and drives Zambia's future.

As we celebrate this Farmers' Day, we are also excited about the upcoming launch of our Supplier Development Program for farmers. Through this initiative, we aim to support local farmers, strengthen their capacity, and create opportunities for them to become valued partners in our supply chain.

We believe that when local farmers grow, communities prosper and together, we build a stronger future.

At Sino Metals, we believe agriculture is more than an industry, it is a foundation for sustainable growth and shared prosperity. That belief is reflected not only in our commitment to supporting local farmers, but also in our own actions. We have established an area where we grow crops for our staff, demonstrating our confidence in the power of agriculture and leading by example.

Happy Farmers' Day to all the men and women whose hard work keeps our nation growing. We celebrate you today and every day.

Years ago, Mwansa Mwelwa joined Sino Metals as a young professional, eager to learn, grow and build a future. Over the years, he has grown alongside the company, receiving mentorship, opportunities and unwavering support as he developed both professionally and personally.

This weekend in Chingola, we had the privilege of witnessing another milestone in that journey as Mwansa married the love of his life, Phaides.

Standing beside him was not only his family and friends, but also his Sino Metals family. Led by company CFO, Mr. Zhao, a team of colleagues travelled to celebrate this joyful occasion, a reflection of the bonds we continue to build beyond the workplace.

At Sino Metals, we believe that investing in people goes beyond developing careers. It is about empowering individuals to discover their potential, build meaningful lives, raise strong families.
Today, Mwansa begins a new chapter, not only as a valued employee, but as a husband, a future father, and someone who will help shape the next generation. We are honoured to have walked part of that journey with him.

To Mwansa and Phaides, thank you for allowing us to share in your special day.

From your entire Sino Metals family, congratulations!

May your marriage be filled with love, wisdom, joy and forture!

A major milestone has been reached at the Mutende Resettlement Site with the successful drilling of the first borehole, delivering a reliable source of water for the upcoming new community that's taking shape.

This marks the beginning of a comprehensive water reticulation system that will provide clean water to every household while also supporting irrigation and sustainable livelihoods for relocated families.

As site clearing continues and essential infrastructure comes together, each milestone brings the vision of a safer, better-planned community one step closer to reality.

Some investments are measured in tonnes. Others are measured in transformed lives. β€οΈπŸ“š

Every child deserves the chance to dream.

For the learners of Minsenga Secondary School, a new classroom block means more than bricks and mortar. It means shorter journeys to school, brighter classrooms, and a future that feels closer than ever before.

What began in 2024 as a response to a community need has become a place where tomorrow's doctors, engineers, teachers and leaders are taking their first steps toward their dreams.

At Sino Metals Leach Zambia, we believe that supporting education is one of the most meaningful ways to invest in the future.

By working alongside Government to improve access to quality learning infrastructure, we are helping create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

Every lesson learned today is another foundation stone for a stronger family, a stronger community, and a stronger Zambia.

Opening the Site, Sharing the Progress

On 4 June, Sino-Metals Leach Zambia welcomed media representatives to its Chambishi operations for a Media Open Day, offering a closer look at the remediation, environmental restoration and tailings safety works currently being carried out.

During the visit, media representatives toured soil remediation areas, ecological rehabilitation sites, selected stream sections, the tailings facility and decommissioning site. Our technical teams walked them through the work taking place on the ground β€” from soil treatment and vegetation recovery to tailings facility reinforcement, environmental monitoring and closure management.

The day also included a documentary preview and an open engagement session with company management and technical specialists.

For us, opening the site is not only about showing progress. It is about allowing people to see the work for themselves, ask questions, and better understand the steps being taken with the guidance of relevant authorities and technical experts.

Today in Kalusale, environmental remediation works continued as Targus Zambia distributed agricultural lime to local farmers as part of the ongoing soil restoration programme.

While tractor-assisted liming is already underway across affected fields, additional lime is being provided directly to households to help treat smaller areas around homes and nearby surroundings.

This exercise is part of the wider recovery effort being carried out in collaboration with community members and relevant authorities, with the shared goal of restoring affected areas safely and responsibly.

Ministry of Agriculture officers from Kalulushi District were present to explain the importance of agriculture lime application to field and demonstrate to the farmers how to apply.

At Sino Metals, we understand that environmental restoration goes beyond machinery and technical processes. It is also about working hand in hand with communities, listening to their concerns, and supporting recovery on the ground.

We remain committed to supporting the remediation process and ensuring that affected communities remain at the centre of these ongoing efforts.
