A BREAKDOWN OF HOW MUCH IT COST TO PRODUCE 6 INCH CONCRETE BLOCKS AND WHAT IS REQURED

Blocks are the one of the most utilized commodity in construction which cost an average of k4.5 to produce each 6 inch block and it doesn’t end there because with block the more you produce the cheaper the cost of production thus making it one of most lucrative business venture in the construction industry.
Let me break this down for you and give you a full picture of what to expect but note that information provided is based on Zambian economic condition of raw material prices and other data collected from a survey we conducted in various locations in Lusaka as of 2026.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO PRODUCE 6 INCH BLOCKS?
Using a standard ratio of 1 bag of high grade cement (42) to 8 domestic wheelbarrows of block mix (quarry) gives you 65-70 standard sized 6 inch blocks. Each wheelbarrow of block mix weighs approx. 100kgs so 8 wheelbarrows will be 800kgs.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PRODUCE 6 INCH BLOCK?
A bag of cement cost approximately k180 and if we consider adding a k20 on each bag of cement for other expenses we can establish it to cost k200. 1000kg of quarry dust cost k130 on average, however we can put it at k150 to consider k20 for other extra expenses such as labor. Now only 800kg will be used therefore using high school mathematics cross multiplication method 800kg will cost k120.
We can now add 120 + 200 giving a total of k320 cost of producing 65-70 concrete blocks. Now to calculate the cost of producing one block we divide 320 by 70 which brings us to a cost of k4.5 for each block.
Now imagine your building a house that requires 10,000 blocks. Market price of blocks is between k8 - k10 this means you spend k80,000 – k100,000 just to buy the blocks but using the k4.5 if you are producing the blocks onsite you are only going to spend K45,000.
